Not enough blacks in tech: Jackson

Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson plans to lead a delegation to the Hewlett Packard annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday to bring attention to Silicon Valley’s poor record of including blacks and Latinos in hiring, board appointments and startup funding.

Makes you wonder why, as Asians and whites currently dominate silicon valley. Is it because of their upbringing, does poverty play a part or is it just a lack of interest in IT?

If you look at FPS gaming, there is a lack of female players vs males, now is this because of the lack of interest in the hobby, or is it because the time an dedication needed to master the controls, or is it just the sexist remarks they experience when they play that puts them off?

My point is if you want people to move into a field, find out what keeps them out and see if you can fix it, don't just go blaming the industry, as I'm sure Jesse Jackson is going to do......

Maybe the good Rev Jackson should go and visit a school or two rather than HP...

'They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk...

Why you ain't

Where you is

What he drive

Where he stay

Where he work

Who you be...

And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. ;< /SPAN>

And then I heard the father talk.

Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth.

In fact, you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around.

The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal.

These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what??

And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.

I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit.

Where were you when he was 2??

Where were you when he was 12??

Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol??

And where is the father?? Or, who is his father?

People putting their clothes on backward, isn't that a sign of something gone wrong?

People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something?

Or, are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up?

Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?

What part of Africa did this come from??

We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans. They don't know a thing about Africa .
With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.

Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem.

We have got to take the neighborhood back.

People used to be ashamed. Today, a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now.

We have millionaire football players who cannot read.

We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs.

We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal- Mart with seven kids... you are hurting us.

We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.

We cannot blame the white people any longer.

- Dr. William Henry 'Bill' Cosby, Jr., Ed.D.

Oh yes, good ol Jesse is assuredly going to blame the US tech industry for "keeping blacks out"

Same as here, they are going to then lobby to have that industry regulated (BEEE) and vilified as white elitists who are greedy and have all the money.

Sound familiar?

It's not the industry, it's the lack of will to study and work in that industry that is the problem.
And before anyone flames me and says, yes but you can't use SA as an example, I have been in IT for over 20 years. I worked with black dudes doing amazing work and with equal technical expertise, even back then.

What is the problem, is the political elite, who in their (in)action? influence the youth to hate all things technological (white) and be utterly dependent on social grants and hand outs.
There are a LOT of ALL races here in SA, involved in IT you numb-nuts! It's the government that is useless!

over half of silicon valley companies are founded by immigrants (Indians, Asians, east Europeans, heck, even South Africans)
you don't see them complaining about lack of opportunity.

I might as well lament the disproportionate representation of black males in rap music and cry discrimination
grow the **** up Jesse

Jackson, another religous bigot and racist.

Maybe he thinks A(nother)A(ss) should be applied in the USA.

There is no race card to play in the US, because our government bought all the race cards of the world, using taxpayer money.

This just perpetuates the perception that black people needs special treatment so they can compete with the rest.

oi.... wtf.... one would think americanos would have figured it out yet :(
if a certain group are not in majority in a particular field, maybe they just not interested. why the f does it even matter.
we cant all have the same interests.
some people are just racists.

Look at the Asian American (Democratic Party) backlash against AA. They're saying they want to protect their children, and Asians usually have higher than average IQs in America, from being disadvantaged by the affirmative action.

As lifelong advocates for the Asian American and other communities, we would never support a policy that we believed would negatively impact our children. Given that many in the API and other communities throughout the state feel that this legislation would prevent their children from attending the college of their choice, we have asked Senator Ed Hernandez to hold SCA 5 until he has an opportunity to meet with affected communities and attempt to build a consensus.

We believe that stopping SCA 5 and, instead, encouraging the proponents to work with all the stakeholders would be in the best interest of all communities.

When USA becomes more Latino and Asian, most of this AA stuff there will stop.

I found online anti-racist black commenters to be often atheist. Some of the most extreme that is. Let's not turn from racist bigotry to anti-religious bigotry. OK?

Oh no, not another of these "rant & rave" threads. I wish we in SA can talk about something without feeling the need to drag our oppression into it.

Please forgive them for they know not what they do?

And what exactly would be the number needed for there to be enough blacks? Maybe there are enough blacks in Silicon Valley given the current state of schooling they recieve and the way they are brought up, as mentioned by Bill Cosby.
