Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post. I have been going crazy all day thinking that my Macbook has a virus of some kind but now the plot has thickened and I would really appreciate some help.

We are on Telkom ADSL with the D-Link wireless modem. When I try to open Youtube it takes me to a (fake) page that warns me that my flash player is out of date and I need to click ok to continue to an update page. It still has Youtube in the address bar and I know for sure that my flash player is up to date as I carefully updated it earlier directly from the adobe website. I get the same thing happening on several other websites too. On trying Facebook I get a range of sites - sometimes the same one as youtube - my flash player is out of date - sometimes it says maintenance in progress please try later and sometimes 403, forbidden, I do not have permission to access the server.

Why I say the plot thickens is that the same thing is happening on my iPad and iPhone as well which makes me think that it can't be a virus on my laptop. Something very weird is going on here. Has anyone else experienced this or know a way of sorting this out??

Your dns has been hacked.

Log into the router and change your dns back to auto or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

And then change the support user password. That's how they get in.

The default password for support account should also be support.

Happened to a few people I know recently.

Damn dsl2750u routers.

Wow thank you very much for the fast reply! I'll try that immediately....!

themank, thank you very much! Problem solved after a frustrating day! What is the idea of hacking the router? Presumably to put some kind of virus onto people's computers when clicking the links?

I'm pretty sure this has happened to me as well. Aiiiiii....... changed the DNS.

FYI my wife had been on the line to telkom support as we had a glitch yesterday and the telkom operator gave her a new password over the phone to put in to reset the router. I'm guessing that it's possible that she (the telkom woman, not my wife!) is in on the scam to hack the routers.

The Telkom helpdesk would've changed the ISP password, not the Router password,so the lady is not at fault.
I actually just helped my brother with the same issue. He still had the default login password to access the router.Changed that and reset the DNS server and all sorted.

Well, I changed it and changed my password so I guess my router is secured again. But there seems to have been a lot of damage already done to my PC. The wireless won't connect to the router, and neither will the wired LAN cable. The internet won't connect to a number of common sites like Google sites. Seems like I managed to get it properly stuffed up and I hope I don't have to reinstall Windows to fix it.

We definitely got saved by having a Mac. It kept trying to download .exe files which would have done a lot of damage to a Windows machine no doubt. So seemingly they hack the DNS to redirect you and get you to download their file. I also couldn't get on to Google sites and common sites like Facebook and Youtube wanted to get me to download the "virus" or whatever it was.

With themank's advice above and the password changed all seems to be good again.

Thanks absinth, that makes me feel a lot better. Although you've blown my conspiracy theory out of the water! :)

How are you getting on cerebus? Any damage to your computer?

Yes the virus had completely disabled my wireless and ethernet. I spent some time this morning to locate the corrupt entries and get rid of them. Now it seems to be back to normal pretty much.

Cool, well done, glad the damage is minimal. Luckily you know what you are doing, I would have been in serious trouble!

Thanks again to all for the help.
