SA prices from 2004 to 2014: ADSL vs mobile data vs petrol vs DStv vs Big Mac

I am sure some of the same things that increased here has also increased in other countries. Sorry but I cannot take this negativity that is slowly becoming part of life in SA. Just saying...:whistle:
 
What's not on the chart is inflation.
R8,000 in 2007 is roughly the same worth as almost 20,000 now.
(If the accuracy of my math offends anyone, please correct it.. this is from memory on a calculation regarding salary that I did almost 1.5 years ago)

A big mac is technically cheaper now than then. :) Thanks Mc'Ds!
 
Technology and Internet has improved 100-fold, so these are terrible markers for inflation and the % declines for data are jokes.
Petrol, Big Macs ... these things don't change. Those numbers are scary.
Big Mac has increased by 90% and petrol by 238% ... more domestic/international regulations & controls.
 
Of course everyone knows it, but we need to say and think and repeat it and start making it the standard way we comment ... it's not that prices of some things have increased; rather it is the value of money that has decreased. Our government, and most governments worldwide, systematically debase the currency by artificially inflating the money supply. The term Inflation is underhand and disingenuous NewSpeak for currency corrosion, and it's done almost entirely by governments.

I have to agree - Prices may have increased, but there are far more factor to take into consideration.

However having said that - "Telkom line rental... 92% increase" That is PATHETIC!!!

Petrol price graph is problematic, petrol went up to around R10.50 back in mid-2008. Then the "financial crisis" happened around the later part of the year and petrol dropped drastically to R6-something. If I remember correctly.

But then you'll have all these people saying it can't be true that they pay less tax now.
 
I was contemplating over the weekend how my internet access has changed over time, where costs, speed, and available cap kept leapfrogging each other.

With modems long years ago, you could download as much as you wanted, but payed through the nose to Telkom.

Costs came down, speeds went up. Over the past few years, I was initially in situation that I could download much faster than my cap allowed. Then I got more cap for the same cost, but speed stayed the same and I could run downloads non-stop without worrying about using it all up. Then speed increased, and now I am running out of cap again. All at the same price.

Bottom line is, internet costs has come down in more ways than one.
 
One would expect with this high petrol price, people would start to drive economical cars. Every morning when I drive to work, almost every second vehicle is a fuel guzzler (oversized SUV, 4x4, Double cab bakkie).
Most of them drop a kid at school.
If the demand drop, so will the price.

Strange, that with all the technological advances, there is still no viable alternative for petrol/diesel.
Me smells a conspiracy.
