Any news about the City of Cape Town's fibre?

It should be a wonderful thing for people in the CBD particularly, but it seems that there's only one supplier RSAweb - so prices are extremely high.

It should be a good alternative to ADSL, but it's still overpriced.

Is there likely to be any competition soon?

From what I remember Cybersmart were offering a 100mbps fibre in the CBD (or 10km of it if I remember correctly) for R10 000 per month.

Correct, our Body Corporate is currently in the process of entering an agreement with Cybersmart however they are charging us an "installation" premium of sorts since they have to dig up paving etc.

For individual users that would mean R400pm with access to a 100mb line, currently its a 10mb line. Also it should be noted that 100mb means 100mb upload and 100mb download, or at least that's what I've been told by Cybersmart.

Installation also takes a while, about a month at least.

CoCT are bust putting fibre down in Sea Point (beach rd area).
They are also running cable up to the roof of Pavilion Place (the very tall building opp the swimming pools) - presumably for wifi to cover the area.

I had to raise the funding which proved rather difficult, but now that the funding has been raised the contract is sitting with the chairman who has been a bit busy to sign it.

From the time the contract is signed to when the service goes live is 3 months, so its been a rather frustrating journey for myself. Nevertheless I'm hoping to meet with the chairman tomorrow to get him to sign the contract.

I am located in Cape Town CBD.

In case anyone wants to see a speedtest from RSAWeb 100Mb fibre

(Still not 100% fibre to us, last 300m is a wireless microwave link, will be replaced with fibre as well but these microwave devices can do 400Mbps up and down with 1ms latency so that's not an issue at all)

Don't ask about international speeds, if you get more than 4Mb you are lucky...

Can also add we have fibre form Telkom and Neotel. Neotel behaves the best of them all. For the 4 years we had neotel it has never gone down, and never had any speed issues, not even international, although it's only 15Mb it's still the fastest international access we have.

That ping to Jhb is impressive, Cybersmart said it would hover more around 28ms-30ms with their service.

I have 10 more weeks to wait to have my fibre installed, the City came to do a site inspection last week.

As far as I can remember we also saw the same ping times when we went to their (Cybersmart) office here in town. They did a few speedtests to show what one can expect.

the City was out here last month and trenching will start the 27th October, so I expect the service to go live in December.

A new problem is our internal LAN, we have to upgrade our switches and network cable etc, this will set us back about 120k. I'm not IT expert and nobody else thats involved on ourside are either so this is going to be tricky problem to circumvent.

yes, we have 10/100 switches that apparently will be a bottle neck, our backbone is cat6 cable but from the switches on the floors to the end user it is cat5.

So even though the fibre can plug into the server switch end users won't get the full performance until the LAN is upgraded.

The 120k quote is for upgrading the switches and changing all the cable to cat6, we are still waiting for the quote to change all the cable to fibre but I'm guessing the price will be more or less the same since most of the cost is in the labour as I understand things.

I see Cybersmart are now offering 200mb solutions and 5:1 contention ratios as well.

There are about 100 units in my building (13 above ground floors) so they all would have to be done, but out of the 100 units only about a maximum of 60 units will be accessing the internet.

At this point I am not inclined to spend the money, simply install the service and see what happens but if we want to run VOIP we have been advised that fibre will definitely be required.
 
This has been a long journey but it seems I'm nearly there.

I approached Cybersmart last November with my issue and they basically said "bring the money and we bring the internet"

It took me 5 months to raise the R11 000 for 24 months (R1000pm amortised installation) and another 3 months before we eventually signed the contract. It now seems the fibre will plug into our server in the first half of December.
