Why did they close all of the I max theatres in the first place ?

And what has changed that would justify opening them again ?
 
New imax format is not the same as the old school imax. There was a thread on it a while back.

I went to see Noah and Captain America in "Imax" here in Edmonton and was so disappointed in the screen size. The first time I went, I was fully expecting the huge screen (original IMAX as per above image) It definitely wasn't worth the extra $$

Digital IMAX is LieMAX.

It's not the IMAX we're used to.
 
If one considers the current prices of Cinema tickets do Ster-Kinekor really think that enough people are willing to fork out even more $$ for IMAX?!

I don't see this ending well in the long run.

Rather have the reclining leather seat of Prestige than a fake Imax. Fewer knobs in the theatre to annoy you too...

It's just closed down. There are plans to demolish and renovate large sections of the mall including the normal cinemas, but I'm not sure about the Imax.

Riding on the name, IMO. The Menlyn Imax had started showing main-stream full length features in the last year before it closed, which was met with a fully packed cinema. We loved seeing installments from The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, How to Train your Dragon, The Dark Knight and Watchmen on that massive screen. It far exceeded the quality of the 3D versions
