MTN fibre-to-the-home details

So will this bring the value of the properties down seeing as you are bound to MTN with these prices?

Wonder what the OOB is, cause your gona be in for a world of hurt very quickly with that pathetic cap.

I would expect 5TB of data at that speed for that price! :sick:

Jannie did say <100 people isn't really worth the money for ISPs - need 100+ people to have it ADSL type prices.

Monaghan Farm seems that 30-40 people signed up.

No need to panic yet.
 
Their pricings are mostly not competitive towards ADSL even if it is faster. They probably don't like being competative...

I'm amused... Lets compare for a second...

20meg in Nairobi as a standalone product... *uncapped* costs around R750. If you want it with 85 TV channels thrown in (half of which are in HD), you can have it for R1215 a month.

So... here in South Africa, you get half the speed with a tiny 5 gig cap for more than you pay for a 20 meg uncapped connection in Kenya......

MTN is rather amusing :)
 
Lol, why even offer anything less than 50gigs. Even that is pushing it.

Sounds like the Zuku one? Although that's a nice price, Zuku FUP does imply it's soft-capped (horrible wording about "too much usage and you'll go to a lower speed") - and ZA must be doing infrastructure right, as Zuku's max speed is 20Mbps (1Mbps, 8Mbps, 20Mbps fiber speeds? What a joke!) where this seems to be where ZA is starting.

Just need to get the operators to deliver on that R1000 uncapped pricepoint which they have implied will come when they hit decent scales.
 
IMO fiber should not be capped, but if you have to cap it please let it be reasonable caps (100GB+) . Seriously what does 5GB do on a 100Mbps connection, stream your 1 favorite Netflix movie and that's it for that month? What's the use of high speed& good quality connection with no data???

Playing with my limited Excel / stats knowledge (and not officially asking questions - farting around on the computer is more fun than either websites, or call centres!), it seems pricing is just shy of R4/GB, and line speeds s are priced as follow
10Mbps: ~ R809 /pm
20Mbps: ~ R942 /pm
40Mbps: ~ R1152 /pm
100Mbps: ~ R1952 /pm

The figures do not work exactly, but lets give their marketing department leeway to down some prices to 'selling points'?
Below what the above numbers yields, reasonably inside the ballpark (namely the published MTN prices)...

Zuku was one such product, there are others coming and they go over 20mbit, 40+mbit GPON is on its way as well, and you could take that to 100mbit as well. Keep in mind as well that Zuku technically isn't fiber, its fiber delivered to points and then cable from there (I'm no fan of Zuku I might add, I was simply highlighting a price differential).

Though, even if you compare mobile data in Kenya to the prices in South Africa, its a fraction of the price, telecommunications in South Africa by comparison to East Africa are insanely expensive.
 
Is this a "closed", monopolistic system where only MTN will supply data, or is it an "open" system where you can use your ISP of choice?
