Vodacom's free 1GB data promo: network stats

It was a success.

They got a ton of information they can use to improve the network and for that little bit I am happy.

My inability to use Vodacom yesterday was an irritation and then "giving it away" as a birthday present was obviously just an excuse but I did find the experiment itself to be fascinating.

I hope they give out more data, specifically on a regional basis.
 
I guess any Vodacom user who connected on Sunday 'participated', whether they knew about the promo or not, even if they moved one byte.

Unfortunately there are so many times a free gig would have been very helpful to me, and yesterday wasn't one of them
 
I wonder if the 8 million used the full 1GB - or if they'd count you if any attempt to access the data network was made?

In other words everyone that accessed any data was counted on Sunday, regardless if they knew about the promo or not, or used the full 1GB or not?

Hmmmm ... so of the 33 million subscribers, only 8 million managed to reduce the network to its virtual unusable state on the day.

Yup, sounds like a successful promotion and gift-giving campaign, high-5s and bonuses for the marketing department.
 
In summary:

8 million subjects were guinea pigs to test out Vodacom's network capacity, all in the name of birthday celebrations?

Sweet.

Let's do this again.
 
Ya, used a few megs but discovered this morning that Vodacom had depleted my airtime balance. C*&^s !

As I predicted in the other thread.... less than a quarter of their subscribers. Now imagine what would have happened if another 8 million were able to beat the congestion and also use their free 1 GB?

I used about half a gig. I had a google Hanguout with my mom first thing in the morning, it lasted about 45 mins.

The rest of the day the network was unusable.

Sucks if you were hoping to message your mom later on...
 
The free data bundle was useless to me. I think I wasted more time trying to use it than downloading anything, I only managed about 80mb off the 1gb that was allocated. I needed to use the internet for some important stuff, but the network was so slow I had to switch to MTN. They should have realised that even though Sunday is an off day for most people, there are those that still need the internet for work, by congesting the network they've probably chased away their important customers.
 
I would like to thank Vodacom for the 60 MB I was able to use on Edge yesterday (not sarcastic here).

If I had better reception it would have been awesome, but ja it was nice.

You give them way too much credit.
 
I could download about 700 meg because I left my download on from about 8 yesterday morning. The speeds increased from about 18:00 and I downloaded to midnight when it automatically moved over to my night owl package to complete my download of 913 meg..

I actually agree with AstroTurf. They must have corrected a lot of data to improve their network. You have to push boundaries in order to improve. And if that improvement comes with a price drop, then well done to them. Everyone benefits

Except it really wasn't. What their experiment showed was what happens when you give a truck of food to famined people. It's not an accurate representation of what would happen when you give those people an all you can eat buffet whenever they're hungry for a small payment or in the case where these people can't afford to pay some work in return.

When people are bandwidth starved they will try to squeeze every bit out of their cap but if they are satisfied then most will do 1 or 2 gig even on uncapped. Just make it affordable enough so most have access to it.

People should learn to check the allocation first. Mine was only done after 4am and I suspect some were never allocated.
 
This is getting ridiculous for f sake.
It was a bloody mess and they know it.
You should have heard Richard on 702 today. He sounded like he was red in the face.
Stupid bloody Vodacom
