How South Africa is connected to the Internet

Seacom now has 12Tbps of capacity? Thats a pretty significant upgrade over its design capacity.

Yeah it's quite incredible how upgradable the cables are.

SACS at 40 terabits is a behemoth. Hopefully the route is significantly shorter and we see a notable reduction in ping times to North America.

This map has always made me wonder how vulnerable we are. How easily the whole thing can be shut down at just a few key points by terrorists, or our own government (same thing really). What backups do we have? Iridium, yeah, kinda. Astrasat? The cell phone companies (with their big-ass dishes) are in government's pockets, so they don't count. How do we compare?

Quite an incredible increase in capacity recently wish I was at sea at not stuck in JHB with a poxy maximum 4MB ADSL connection because the @#$%^& A holes can't get me any faster and paying 10x more than my daughter in the UK who has a 40MB connection. Yeah lets stick more cables around Africa that's solving the problem!

All the international connectivity we need for now, but an utterly dog **** terrestrial last mile network...

wireless 3G/4G networks go double the speed of the fastest available wired residential connection, and overseas people download many times faster from SA hosts than we can on our fastest ADSL lines.

So last mile is our problem seeing we've got quite a lot of capacity at our disposal as soon as you reach the undersea cable. Looking forward to more Vumatel like moves perhaps we will finally get to utilize that capacity better

We have similar issues to most countries in that regard.

Most of Australia's east bound cables to the States land in a very small area as well.
