Thanks. When I bought the ballade it was a head vs heart scenario and head one. This time going to look second hand and look more towards heart.

The A3 sedan looks gorgeous. Type R sounds good as well, just worried second hand ones would be driven into the ground. or is this unfounded as there's no turbo?

Renault Megane also looks nice, but worried about it falling apart. In Renault news:

A3 sedan is a great car, but I'll be honest and say that it would be hard to find one secondhand, and even then it will be near impossible for under 300k. Might be able to find a few current model A3 hatches around 200 though.

Any car can be driven into the ground, turbo or no. N/A should be less risky than a performance turbo car though.

Megane is a decent car, but not made for tall people at all. Space isn't the best overall either.

Perhaps a Suzuki Swift sport?
 
What about a 1.4 Golf polo 6. I have one as a run around its brilliant and comes with all the bells and whistles. Got it with 4000km for R169

Insurance is about R800 a month

No turbo removes a big worry, but yes, you buy a performance car to drive it like a performance car. Though bear in mind that some are owned by enthusiasts that take every care in the world to look after their cars properly. I'd buy a Civic Type R that has been driven hard by someone who knows what he's doing, rather than Ballade/Civic from the regular Joe as anexample.

I love the hot hatch Renaults, and the same scenario above applies here as well, if it has been looked after by it's enthusiast owner there should be no hesitation in buying one. Yes, cars with turbos and fancy auto boxes have more risk, just need to weigh up the pros and cons. Clio Sport is lovely, and AFAIK there are some bargains on the market (haven't looked recently but there were a few weeks back). Same goes for the Meganes.

You're quite young IIRC, so just check with insurance before committing to a hot hatch of any brand, if under 25 they'll nail you without any lube.

I had the same idea, currently have a Merc, which is awesome, but some really good deals on the 2008 A6's, but insurance is triple what i pay for my merc (according to Hippo), so no thanks. scratched that idea.

There are multiple situations in which a rear end is completely the fault of the driver whom was rear ended, some examples:
Change lanes in a multi lane road as you say (eg. low speed vehicle moves in front of a fast moving vehicle)
Vehicle not obeying the minimum speed on a carriage way.
Vehicle parked illegally in a road obstructing it. (eg. illegal parking at night)
Turn into a road right in front of another vehicle
Reversing into another car
Braking intentionally without reason (eg. road rage)
etc.

And yes it is a fallacy. Blame is assigned as a percentage value if such a case where to go to court.

It quickly becomes apparent (or should I hope) why insurance companies just settle their own clients damage rather than try their luck.

I found the Type R to be hellishly uncomfortable and research suggests also quite rof on fuel probably because you need to drive it's tits off the whole time.

It's one of those cars that is a boy racer all the time and therefore not very versatile.

What about a regular civic?

I have a new Renault and let me tell you the ride is smoother than STS's bottom. Fuel consumption is ok unless you drive like ShaunSA with his souped up Turbocharged Citi-Golf. They have an unfounded bad reputation here in South Africa for some reason.

Reason: Dealerships used to be really bad and couldn't repair cars properly...

If driven well it's not that bad on fuel, though yes it is quite a hard ride. Very far from the familar car ballade.

The regular Civic hatch is much softer and less thirsty, a good choice if you don't want the boy racer vibe. The sedan is more of the same as his Ballade.
