Amazon to take on Google in Internet advertising

This could be very interesting...

I just don't see Amazon having the kind of all encompassing data about a person that Google does...

They can sit back and in 5 years still have little data on us, or they can start collecting now.

Unless Amazon offers a very attractive display network, I doubt this will go anywhere. Google's display network works so well as most traffic originates from SERPs and unless Amazon gets into search (Bing & Yahoo perhaps?), just relying on affiliate display networks will not really create enough depth. Most online businesses (with the exception of financial institutions) generate only about 20% of traffic through SEM and the rest is organic search and direct traffic.

And here I am with my next project building our ad server. Have some way to go..

Need more of your timestamped locations :D

I feel that Amazon is actually a lot better at using their data than Google. Google ads for me (and everyone I know) are almost always totally irrelevant and annoying, but Amazon's suggestions often have me clicking and checking them out.

As you said - this could be very interesting. Amazon are a worthy opponent, one can never dismiss them.

Bear in mind that Amazon owns AWS, which is home to millions of websites and services. They might not have a search engine, but do they really need it? They have excellent relationships with the guys who make the sites, and if they can somehow make it attractive for their existing AWS customers to use their new ad network, they could quite easily gain a meaningful share of the ad business very quickly.

More clutter on the Web, ads are just annoying sometimes when they get sprayed everywhere you go

If you visit Amazon's product pages you will notice that they currently use Google display network to display other products - this is done very well and does not become too obvious. Like @elvis_presley said, since Amazon lacks search like Google or Yahoo/Bing, they would have to build a display network which works on an affiliate basis. Amazon already has the affiliate functionality for their own products and by the sounds of it, they will now extend it to 3rd party advertisers.

If you run a website / display advertising you might want to keep an eye on this, as Amazon will certain provide higher profit-share than it's competitors (at least in the beginning).
