SAA acting CEO has no degree: report

SA Airways acting chief executive Nico Bezuidenhout is the latest in a series of high-profile executives and politicians who have been exposed for overstating their qualifications, Sunday Times reported.

Why did I study ? I could be CEO right now if I dropped out of university !

Fire the ****er. Odds or nothing will happen to him though.

It sounds like he wasn't really at fault. He said he never finished his degrees, but the people who drew up the report said that he had. Also it looks like he actually did most of the degrees he enrolled in, just left didn't see them to completion.

This is in contrast to the others who point blank lied about having qualifications, or enrolled in courses but never actually did anything.

Couldn't care less. People without the qualifications shouldn't be in these positions.

If he has the experience and is competent, why shouldn't he be there and need a degree to show this ?

Honestly, I have a pile of degrees, none of which I actually use in my work. It just helps me getting a better salary.

Autodidacts succeed very well too (Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg...)

I beg to differ, I have nothing more than matric and a a+ , and 20 years of experience, does that mean I'm allowed to be a executive, and the IT manager of a large corporation? I can do everything people from university with a "degree" can do, if not better, doesn't mean I can't do the job

Suggest he rather gets a Zimbabwe degree or a SA std 8 woodworking.
At least he has Matric and as long as he never lied.

I really doubt that any BEE appointed person in SA has any degree whatsoever. This comes as no surprise.

What bothers me though is that this is the people who wants to shorten the training period and relax the flight hour requirements for pilots and appoint more black pilots for SAA. This will, naturally, allow these pilots to also present false qualifications and get behind the seats of 737's, 747's, Airbus's and take hundreds of passengers at a time to the skies.

Tragedy is closer than what anyone can imagine!

You're right, though this gentleman doesn't quite have 20 years of experience, he was asked to temporarily head up Mango which speaks of his competence.

The airlines do not make the training. This is the role of the civil aviation authorities and believe the FAA and EASA check very carefully if the pilots are properly trained and if the airlines have proper maintenance and procedures before they enter the US or european skies.

If the advertised position requires a degree, there often are good reasons for that. Or, do you think it is simply done for the fun? Secondly, will you apply for the position and claim you have a degree, because of your working experience? That is the problem here in SA, it is seen as normal and acceptable - well, in reality, it is not.

I hope this type of news hits the Western world - even if they just keep track of it. They need to know the coming dangers when high-moving projectiles are about to attempt landing in their countries. We pose a risk not only to our own nationals, but also to those abroad.

No, the airlines to provide training, and continuous training as well. And, yes, you are correct, pilot performances are being monitored by authorities abroad as well. In the future, nothing good will come from this.

Sorry, I didn't write properly what I meant.

Depends of the airlines, some do it in-house, smaller ones don't and rely on bigger airlines (same for the maintenance) but the training programmes are monitored by the civil aviation authorities.

In the worst case, they'll get in the black list and will need to implement procedures and re-structure under the close watch of EASA and FAA.

I don't see any wrong doing on this guy's side if he was straight up about not having a degree, what matters is that he is competent.

If he lied then regardless of competence it becomes a big big issue because the persons integrity is simply not sufficient for such a position.

Not sure if you were specifically thinking of Nico Bezuidenhout here, but he doesn't look like a BEE appointed person. Probably more nepotism and camaraderie in this case ... or he is actually good at his job (there is always hope).

The point of a degree though is to prove you know what you say you know. If you don't have a degree, then work experience can say the same thing. Often when hiring people, I look for people who have experience over qualifications because it shows that they can apply the knowledge they have. I've dealt with so many people who have degrees yet are only able to recite what they learn't at university, not actually put that rote learning into practice.

Lying and saying you have a degree when you don't have one, or any experience in the field is where a lot of these ANC big wigs are pissing on my battery.

I agree with you 100%. Being SAA I think the appointment would be BEE, or like you mentioned nepotism. Be as it may, I question the appointment in the light of what has come to light now.

What are you on about? Seems like you have a bee in your bonnet and have forgotten what the thread is about.

Here's a reminder:
SAA at the time said Bezuidenhout had never made it a secret that he did not complete his degrees in industrial psychology or transport economics. He chose to rather start working

He never claimed to have a degree. Just the opposite, he's been upfront and honest about it.

He did not apply for the position. He was asked to act in the position pending a future appointment.

What has come to light exactly?

He should have pointed it out that he was mis-represented in the report, keeping quiet about a crime is also a crime.
