Hi Guys,

As you may know, the Prophecy.co.za online shop has closed down. Here is what you need to know...
  1. We will still honour your warranty. If you need to contact us about that, please click here.
  2. Prophecy did not close, we merely changed direction. You can read why, over here.
  3. We now do rentals for schools, small and medium sized businesses. Pretty much any entity that has been going for three years or longer.
  4. What do we rent? We rent any computer equipment. Minimum amount is about R11 000 ex vat. We sell all equipment with a 3 year on-site warranty (where available). The deal includes free shipping, shipping insurance, installation services (if needed), and insurance for the products (if needed). Also, at the end of the contract term, the equipment is yours (so it's a rent-to-own contract).
  5. All monthly repayments are designed to not escalate annually, so you pay one fee, every month, for the entire duration of the contract (escalation contracts, while we prefer not to do this, are available, on request).

For now, we do not rent to individuals, but we are in discussions with a few places to work something out. If/when this changes, we will let you know. This also includes companies or other entities that has not been going for three years.

Read this if you want to make a bit of pocket money:

You can make some cash for yourself by referring business to us for rental deals. Soon, we will put up an affiliate link on our site, where you can register. If you give us a lead (you must have actually spoken with the company, and know that they are interested) in renting equipment, we will contact them, rent them something, and pay you an affiliate marketing fee for the successful deal from your lead.

For the resellers:

This will provide you with a larger (quite a bit more) markup, than selling the items directly. So, refer first, and then sell if they don't want to rent.

The opportunity for you?

It is my guess that a few of you guys can make a decent amount of money, finding potential customers for us, and providing us with the leads.

Are you a student? Are you unemployed? You could earn a decent amount of money by referring clients to us, as you can see from the example above.

Disclaimer:
  • Prophecy also reserves the right to cancel or nullify an affiliate payment due to unethical behaviour, such as conflict of interest by the lead generator (you cannot be the decision maker, AND earn an affiliate fee - this is unethical behaviour, and we will not get involved with these types of dealings. You will sign a document stating this, as part of the contract).
  • Prophecy also reserves the right to amend or cancel the affiliate structure entirely, if it so deems necessary. So, please check with us if you read this post a year from now.
  • Prophecy reserves the right to amend any terms without prior notification.
  • E&OE and all that Jazz...

Interesting move from Prophecy, but one in which I hope they have success.

It's sad to see you guys go (away from the online shop). Always had good service from you guys over the years.

ok, ghoti, no. This isn't Carbonite. Carbonite is still going ahead as it currently is. :)

Thanks for the support over the years, guys!

This is actually a good thing. Rent-to-own brings along with it a sort of service-level agreement and Prophecy has been known for its service in the past. I can't say that I've wanted to use the site for any of my recent SBGs because it just hasn't been the same for anyone since Take2 got bought, but I have referred people to it in the past.

I've said it before on this forum: Success online for any business has always been about scale, Amazon proves that very well. For smaller companies and brick-and-mortar computer stores, they need to prioritise on offering good after-sales service and friendly assistance even for hardware that isn't their own. Is Takelot going to get techies to reinstall your Windows for you? No, your local nerds will be doing that.

Good luck to you guys! This is a great idea and I hope you'll pursue it to its fullest extent (and by that I mean extend your service to individuals).

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I hope that we work something out to sort out individuals as well. Let's hope for the best :)

Made use of them a few times. Good service.
Their forums were also cool. But as I recall those went down quite a time back.

Surprising. Used them last year for an enclosure I couldn't find anywhere else. Hate losing a viable option for hardware. Good luck though.

Any particular reason they can't dabble in both? Not like they don't have the parts to sell on hand if they service and build machines  Maybe the focus will change to both in the future?

Hi Pitbull,

At this stage, there are no plans to provide both sales and rentals. As is written on our website, we've long suspected that the eCommerce market in South Africa will be dominated by a hand full of large players. For the rest of us, it's a race to the bottom to try and keep up with the prices of the big guys. Prophecy ran on a very low markup (below 10%), and we were considered to be one of the more expensive online shops. So, I doubt we'll get back into that market soon (if ever).

Thanks for the vote of confidence, though :)

Oh the irony, i just registered a Carbonite account 20 freaking minutes ago...

Carbonite doesn't change. It functions independently from Prophecy. Carbonite is a community project, paid for by prophecy, and supported by the community and other resellers. That will not change any time soon (i.e. we have no plans currently to make any changes to Carbonite).

Oh ok, thanks.

I can't log in though... I will check later.

I'm not surprised. Rebel Tech has outpriced Prophecy for a while now.

And in my experience Prophecy's service has way surpassed Rebeltech's.

Henk, remember about three years ago I had that set of Corsair 2x1GB DDR3-1600 you insisted on swapping out for me even though I insisted that I was happy with just using the one working stick and ended up with Super Talent 2x2GB DDR3-2200? :) Yeah, guys, THAT's service :D
