Fibre internet in Gauteng on Openserve (Telkom) network

I'm also still at 25% upload :(. I just desperately want Telkom to double the data caps again.

An overall in ftth access I would say. Upload at around 25% of download speed here.
 
Hey Guys,

So quick question, the Telkom guys landed my fibre line in my yard yesterday and the guy told me even though they are not yet finished with the whole area the line is already live and can be used.

What should I do now? Do I phone Telkom to come and do a installation into my house or what happens next?

That would be unusual, in my experience, but ... maaaaybe.
It all depends whether or not your area is designated as 'available' or still 'planned' on the Telkom FTTH coverage map. This is true even when you can see the physical FTTH infrastructure in your street block or even in your own yard.
Telkom itself may accept pre-orders in an area that still shows as 'planned', but the other ISPs generally won't move until the area shows as 'available'.

  1. Check the Telkom FTTH coverage map. If your area is dark purple ('Availiable'), you're good to go. If your area is still light pink ('Planned'), or worse, not on the map (*gasp*) expect a tougher battle. (As an aside : depending on where you are, there may also be other fibre network operators in your area, eg Vumatel, Frogfoot etc).
  2. Even though your line will be installed and run by Telkom, decide who you want as your ISP. You can choose from line+data packages from RSAWeb, MWeb, WebAfrica, ISPAfrika, Vox ... and of course Telkom itself. Find the deal that suits your needs best. There's plenty of guidance in this thread.
  3. Approach your chosen ISP and indicate that you want to order FTTH service. There's usually an address verification to confirm coverage, and after that, an online order process is usual. If you want to order both your line and data package from Telkom itself, you can phone the Telkom Fibre Help Desk directly on 080-000-7268 and place your order with them. Make sure you get an order number. Phone back a day or two later to make sure your order still exists and follow it up regularly.
  4. Try to be patient during the (sometimes long) wait between ordering and installation.
  5. Perk up when the Telkom technicians call you to come and install.
  6. Enjoy the fibre awesomeness!

Our area is still showing as planned so guess I need to wait a bit then.

In the meantime at least I will start checking which packages are available.

I ordered my line through ISPAfrika and had excellent service (dealt with Garth the entire time - [email protected]). Initially I had some problems with my address due to it being a complex within an estate(Mooikloof Ridge, Pretoria), but after that was nailed down I received an order number within about 3 hours of plotting my address and a Telkom technician came to install the line 8 working days after that.

The install was very simple. They cut my existing ADSL line, taped the fibre to it and pulled it through to the connection point outside (+-15m) and spliced both ends. I was up and running about an hour later.

Using the 20Mbps option on an Afrihost account I have so far had extremely good performance during any time of the day. Costs less than my old 4Mbps uncapped ADSL setup so I am extremely happy :D

On a slightly different (and off-topic) note, this is a nice touch by WebAfrica :

Err Telkom internet have double data from 100 to 200GB permanently.

On a different note, I see that the 25% upload speed is now official, as published on all current Telkom FTTH packages :

I'm not sure if that's going to spill across onto the packages from the others ISPs that operate over Telkom lines. Doesn't seem to have affected my WebAfrica connection yet - still delivering just under 8Mbps upload on a 40Mbps download (ie, still about 20%, which is where it's always been).

Best enjoy that 50% while you can, StoneCold ... seems either some techie in Bloem likes you, or made a typo on the setup screen ;)

The 40meg deal used to be 100GB but then it was doubled for a while and now it's 200GB month. After hours is basically uncapped, over 1TB this month.

Is your VDSL G.993.1 or G.993.2? G.993.1 can only do 3Mbps upload, then the packages you linked would only be able to apply to fiber.
