Amazon Data Center in SA

Probably, saw a lot of jobs advertised a few months back, all job locations situated in Cape Town

Those are mostly software development jobs. Al large part of their AWS team is based in Cape Town. If it was a large number of hardware and network engineer jobs, it would be a better indication of a new data center.

It would be awesome if they did build one here though, it sucks to need to use dedicated servers for anything hosted locally (the current VPS solutions don't help).

I met with them yesterday and they said nothing planned at all. They do have 1,300 developers in Stellenbosch / Cape Town though.

We're going to start selling Riverbed SteelHead cloud to AWS clients or potential AWS clients for optimization

Most of the support for EC2 also happens in CT... so jobs does not mean DC... would be very cool if they did though!

MTN's connection to the EU region of AWS is probably a step in the right direction for DC here...

It's highly unlikely that Amazon will open a region in Africa in the foreseeable future. One of the requirements for an AWS AZ is that it has to have multiple power suppliers and multiple telecoms providers. This won't happen in SA until power is sorted out. Also, it is dependent on the size of the market - SA is tiny compared to other regions. Right now it's just a good as using MTN to direct connect to AWS.

A call centre I could see, and yes they have a Dev house in CPT...

A Data Centre?.. nope not on the cards anytime soon, it would make no sense for them.

There are, as it stands, too many datacentres in this country. It would make sense for them to lease dedicated space in a existing DC, like Google did with Teraco.
