Email is still a problem that Google and others are happy to keep that way

One day when they realize email is a collaboration tool and not a personal tool things will improve, perhaps even a slightly new form of communication will arise.

i.e. just take this forum for example. You start a topic (Or a project) and many people can collaborate on that topic hence keeping it on topic (Unless it is in the public space of course) and in file automatically. Now think of all the add-ons you can do with that!! Maybe someone will catch my drift here but I'm not the one who is going to innovate in this space :p

Many people have discovered Salesforce and the like which pretty much do just that, the trouble is that it's not a standard like Pop3, SMTP and email addressing. Standards arise from open source and open access innovation.
 
The social media tools such as twitter, facebook, whatsapp are great for quick short messages, but fall down when it comes archiving and searching, things that easily done with email systems. As emails are part of business legal documentation they can be archived and searched, something not possible with IM based systems. Additionally, the message length limit which is often imposed, can result in very unclear intentions.

And again, it's a standard. Nobody wonders about whether someone else uses a certain flavour of email or operating system, etc. when sending a mail... given that it technically evolved pre-internet, it's pretty much going to be around for some time to come. I say expand on that standard and add features... I'm sure MS has thought about integrating Skype a little more tightly with email just as Google have with hangouts... but then Skype is proprietary and it won't likely take off.

Log into outlook and connect your skype and outlook accounts. Skype from your mailbox ;)

Sorry, what? There were about 300 million users 2 years ago. I am pretty sure there are even more now.
