Hi,

I am sharing this as I could not find answers and took hours to get this working.

I recently purchased a Asus DSL-AC68U but I do not get VDSL in my area so it was for ADSL internet.

The Auto detect settings do not work, if you are connecting to an ADSL exchange you must set this up manually.

My adsl line was syncing fine but I was getting a system log error "Timeout waiting for PADO packets"

Make sure the first thing you do is update the firmware. Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.378_5007 is my current version.

ADSL setup is as follows...

WAN
WAN Type: DSL - ADSL WAN (ATM)

PVC Setting
WAN Connection Type: PPPoE
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Encapsulation Mode: LLC without PCR

Basic Config
Enable WAN: Yes
Enable NAT: Yes
Enable UPnP: Yes

802.1Q
Set this to no

WAN IP Setting
Get the WAN IP automatically: Yes

WAN DNS Setting
Connect to DNS Server automatically: Yes

Account Settings
User Name: The ADSL username provided by your ISP (You can use a Telkom guest account to test)
Password: The ADSL password provided by your ISP (You can use a Telkom guest account for testing)
PPP Authentication: Leave this to Auto
Idle Disconnect Time in seconds: Disconnect after time of inactivity (in seconds): 0 (I use 0 as I do not want my ADSL line to disconnect)
MTU: 1492
Service Name: leave this blank
Access Concentrator Name: Leave this blank
Additional pppd options: Leave this blank

Special Requirement from ISP
MAC Address: Leave this blank

We are not done yet, Go to "Administration" then click on the "DSL Settings" tab along the top and use these settings... (I had to have Dynamic Line Adjustment and Stability Adjustment disabled to get rid of the "Timeout waiting for PADO packets" error but this might have something to do with my ADSL line)

Administration - DSL Setting
DSL modulation: ADSL2+
ANNEX Mode: ANNEX A/I/J/L/M
Dynamic Line Adjustment (ADSL): Disabled
Stability Adjustment (ADSL): Disabled
Rx AGC GAIN Adjustment (ADSL): Default
Stability Adjustment (VDSL): Disabled
Tx Power Control (VDSL): Disabled
Rx AGC GAIN Adjustment (VDSL): Default
UPBO - Upstream Power Back Off (VDSL): Auto
ESNP - Enhanced Sudden Noise Protection (VDSL): Default
SRA (Seamless Rate Adaptation): Enabled
Bitswap (ADSL): Enabled
Bitswap (VDSL): Enabled
VDSL Profile: 30a Multi Mode
G.INP (G.998.4): Disabled
G.vector (G.993.5): Disabled

Your connection should work now but I ran into a strange problem which I think has something to do with the firmware version I am running as it did not connect. If you have this problem then do the following...

Unplug the ADSL line
Click on the Internet Status little computer icon in the top right under your language selection and click on go to DSL settings (Not too sure of the wording as I am not going to disconnect my active ADSL router to see but it is the only option) Redo these setting as per the top ADSL settings (Not all the same stuff will be there but only change what is there, mine did not have any setting here for some strange reason)

Plug your ADSL line back in and all should work.

Hi SlowHands,

I got this router from Esquire Technologies http://www.esquire.co.za/

It was from the Johannesburg branch and they had stock. This was the only supplier I found in JHB with stock.

They have a Cape Town branch but I am not sure if they have stock. You can get their contact details from the link.

Thank you for the most useful post I've read all week. Saved me the hassle of having to work this out!
Appreciate the effort and level of detail. Get that man a bells!

I have the rt-ac66u with the merlin firmware. I need some help with the qos on this i have a 4 meg line. I am not sure if the firmware is the same on my router and yours but i am pretty sure it is. Would you be able to help with qos settings please.

This modem is really bad on our crummy Telkom lines. I am thinking of getting a really cheap DSL modem and just running it in bridge mode and then letting the DSL-AC68U run as a PPPoE client.

Hi EtienneK,

We've fixed ADSL2/2+ stability issue with certain DSLAM in the latest firmware. Please could you update the firmware and give it a try again?

My router (DSL-AC68U) runs perfectly, and has been running perfectly since I got it (about 5 months ago?). 1st thing I did was to upgrade the firmware, then the auto detect took care of the settings, and all was sorted. Only thing I did really was fiddle with my wi-fi profiles :D

Hi SlowHands,

That's excellent to hear. Please let us know more about your line speed and devices setup? What speed/ range were you able to get?

I trust more and more people will be converting to ASUS Routers once they know how our products will improve their connectivity, range and speed. Not to mention the additional features such as AiProtection (enterprise-level security) and AiCloud (an app that allow you to use your router as a file server).

@ ASUS_SA

Yes mine also worked out the box after the latest firmware update.

The settings for VDSL on the other hand seem to be kept as "state secret"

Eventually clicked around until it worked but still need confirmation on VDSL only settings:

I'll post some stats etc tonight from home.

If I could kiss you I would, exactly the same thing happened to me! Even after I downloaded the latest firmware. Works like a dream now though.

Hi Guys. Hi made a huge cockup. I bought the rt-ac68u instead of the ac68u. The rt does not have the built in modem. How much of an issue do you guys think this is? Will there be any performance hit if I use a dlink 2750u as a modem in bridge mode? Should I rather try exchange the unit for modem/router counterpart? Please help

I don't see this making any difference. I run a dlink setup with a separate modem. Actually I prefer this because its cheaper to replace a modem than a router when lightening strikes!

Thanks reactor. Was thinking about the lightning thing aswell and I agree with you. I think this may have been a blessing in disguise. I may very well keep the unit.

Valid points. Also, standalone wireless routers are generally more powerful than a modem + router 2-in-1 that uses the same chipset. The range will be better too. Hope you enjoy the RT-AC68U!

@ASUS_SA

So setup a 1TB HDD on USB3 port on my DSL-AC68U and ran into the USB3 + 2.4G WiFi Bug of previous models that has NOT been corrected on this model.

Transfer is capped at 25MB until you find the hidden away setting of dis-abling the hardware cap. The USB3 was found to interfer with the 2.4G WiFi signal - so they introduced a hardware cap on transfer rate.

Disabling the cap I see transfers around 35 - 45Mbps peaks. Nowhere near the 5Gbit claimed.

Is anything being done about this limitation at ASUS?

I use a Asus RT-N66U with a Zyxel 1312 in bridge mode. I use it for VDSL.

The Zyxel does VDSL fine, but the wifi is useless.

This setup works very well, so I'm sure that the RT-AC68U would also work well in this mode.

Wouldn't mind getting a DSL-AC68U, but I may switch to fibre soon, and then the modem portion of this would be wasted.

I see that there are some new models out, would any of them have a longer range (for example, RT-AC3200 ) ?

I have never been able to use the 5GHz band, the range is just too short.
