Asus DSL-AC68U ADSL setup

@ASUS_SA

So setup a 1TB HDD on USB3 port on my DSL-AC68U and ran into the USB3 + 2.4G WiFi Bug of previous models that has NOT been corrected on this model.

Transfer is capped at 25MB until you find the hidden away setting of dis-abling the hardware cap. The USB3 was found to interfer with the 2.4G WiFi signal - so they introduced a hardware cap on transfer rate.

Disabling the cap I see transfers around 35 - 45Mbps peaks. Nowhere near the 5Gbit claimed.

Is anything being done about this limitation at ASUS?

Hi avr-rulez,

Many thanks for the enquiry.

Will speak to our technical department and get their feedback on this issue.

Please PM me your email address. Thanks!

Hi avr-rulez,

Feedback from our technical department:

- USB 3.0 will have an impact on 2.4GHz performance, this is unfortunately inevitable
- The function you referred to (located in Advanced Settings > Wireless > Professional tab(2.4GHz)) basically mounts the USB 3.0 Hard Drive in USB 2.0 mode to reduce interference with 2.4GHz
- We have never made any claims of "5Gbit". Not sure where you saw this? This model is AC1900, which refers to a combined 2.4GHz + 5GHz wifi speed of 1900Mbps (on paper)

Please could you explain the type of test you performed and the software you used? Was it a LAN (WiFi) <-> LAN (WiFi) test or WAN test? Please can you also describe the test environment?

Thank you.

Hi ASUS_SA

Please don't get me wrong, this is not a "mud slinging" exercise at this router. It's just that marketing hype as on your website makes claims that don't come close to real world results:

https://www.asus.com/Networking/DSLAC68U/overview/
Multi-purpose USB 3.0 port supports file sharing, printers, 3G/4G dongle sharing and media streaming — with up to 10 times faster data transfer than USB 2.0

Explanation of USB3 throughput

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_3.0
....transfer data at up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s), which is about ten times faster than the USB 2.0 standard.

My real world results are the same as results found by other users on the net. i.e. 25MB limited to USB2 mode and peaks around 45MB when forced into USB3 mode.

Hardware: 1 x WD NAS HDD 1TB EXT3 plugged into router. PC WIN10 connected on Gigabit port and running at Gigabit speed.

Tested with Filezilla copying various file sizes around 5-8GB in size

So your claim of up to 10x faster than USB2(25MB) is just not happening. USB3 is usually around 100MB in real world tests.

This seems to be a technical issue as I have seen guys stating that previous models had shielding etc to try and help??

EDIT: Did not test Wifi 2.4G after switching (it does work) - more important to me is the USB3 issue.

So basically I sit with USB2.5 then...

Not sure if this is the right place. But when I try to use the WAN feature with my external VOX modem my internet drops like every 10 to 15 minutes..

I tried everything from upgrading to the latest Firmware, reverting back to firmware out of the box, and even went back to stock...

Nothing works, can anybody pleas help me, this is driving me crazy!

Hi Guys,

I just bought one of these really fancy & expensive items, bough tout of necessity because of a lightning strike.

I have a VDSL 20 meg line and simply cannot get it to connect. Telco guy condemned the old router and apparently tested with his router, says the line is fine. Spent an hour with the ISP on the phone and then went to the walk in centre. Setup was fine and they connected on their line - thinking about it then may have tested the ADSL(atm) not the VDSL?? Took the modem home and no connection.

More calls to Telkom tell me that it is connected an they can see the IP address. On the modem is shows it is connected but not synching. shows line speed and windows says i have an internet connection? No browsing , no ping, no internet light on the router?

Is the problem
1) At Telkom - (ISP seems to think so)
2) At the ISP
3) With the router ( I find quite lot on the internet about guys battling with this router?)

Suggestions please

My battle was that no-one can give you all the settings related to VDSL. They tend to glaze over when you ask such things as VDSL settings.

Make sure your profile is set for VDSL and not ADSL. Even though the aunty said I was on VDSL at the exchange - there was a further ISAM between the exchange and my house - which see could not "see"

ISAM had to be set correctly ans speed verified.

Ask for tier2 support and asked them if they can give you the VDSL settings.

Settings have been posted above...

If you dont come right - PM me and I will screen grab my settings that work.

Once it connects it is rock steady. I get 19.79Mbps on my 20Meg VDSL line

I got this modem from Esquire during the black Friday madness.

At first everything went fine - the setup auto-detected my ADSL line perfectly and there was nothing I needed to change. Downloaded and installed the latest firmware(as seen by the modem) and everything was perfect for about a week.

Then - I'm not 100% on what happened here since I only came home about an hour later - while it was being dusted, the modem lost power(The UPS it was connected to was shut down somehow) and it just wouldn't connect to the ADSL at all anymore - our old modem still works and I tried a factory reset to no avail.

I still want to try the settings in the first post(PPPoE settings look the same, but I haven't tried any of the advanced settings yet) to see if that (hopefully)works, but it's just strange that it could previously auto-detect all settings and work with it and then suddenly stop working

I cannot thank you enough for this post!!! Would of taken me days to figure out this problem!

Update on my issue - like I thought all the basic settings were the same, I changed my advanced settings as well, but it still doesn't connect. Using the latest 378_9168 firmware available from their website

Checking the system logs, it keeps giving "ntp is not syn" and "Timeout waiting for PADO packets" messages

Edit: Forgot to mention that our old router (Billion Wireless N) still works fine
