Asus router DNS errors

I recently bought an Asus RT-AC58U Wifi router as a replacement for a D-Link router that died. They seem pretty much the same with configurable settings and default setup. I have a fibre line with Vumatel and ISP with Afrihost.

Ever since the upgrade I have been getting DNS errors, ranging from DNS_PROBE_START to NXCONFIG etc. This happens on wireless and wired connectivity.

I've tried setting Google's and Clouflare's DNS on the router's WAN settings, unfortunately to no luck. It's not that I don't have internet, but seems like it's also only Windows devices, and mainly with Chrome that I encounter these DNS issues. I have reset the router about 4 time just leading to frustration by having to reconnect all wifi devices again. I even did a walk-through with Afrihost's support, and no luck.

I don't believe it's a network connection strength issue since my devices are not further than 4m from the router, without any interference.

My only guess to the problem is that there's something on the new router that does not communicate well with the ISP, or the device itself is faulty. However, Asus has all these FAQ troubleshooting methods on DNS issues which make me think it's a common Asus "issue", or that they have amazing support docs.

I'm awaiting the retailer's response to whether I can take it back as possibly being faulty, but I still want to know if it could be anything that I'm missing. Maybe someone has encountered this and it's something small.

Try a firmware upgrade, perhaps that will fix it.
And if you brick it, it will possibly be "faulty".
Win-Win. ;)

By the way, this was not posted in one of the Fibre subforums.
I've tried looking for a new firmware but it seems to be on the latest already.

Omw, thanks, my mistake in choosing the wrong forum. Does that mean I need to copy/paste? Not sure why I chose ADSL/VDSL. Sigh

It's not always necessarily DNS that is an issue but could also be the router that is actually losing connection and when that happens you will get the same error message.

Thanks. I looked at the status presented by the routers web GUI and for 2 devices running browser tabs consecutively, while one of them might be streaming Netflix, the router is running on 86% RAM usage. Now if that's the case of normal RAM usage for this router, then I'm afraid the RAM is too little. It has a total of 128MB. Seems low, but I don't know how it's consumed. I haven't watched the usage while playing online FPS games, but started getting some spikes the past few days.

I don't think it's the cause but you can switch router functions off like wlan scanning, QoS etc to reduce the CPU and RAM usage but I don't think it will cut you off completely.

The best test would be to connect directly to the ONT with a desktop and run it for a while to see if the issue still comes up. If not then you know 100% that the issue is with the router.

Thanks. Yea, I haven't actually done testing like that via the ONT directly. I'll try that tonight. It's just strange to me that by default a DLink router from 3-4 years ago didn't give any issues, while all of a sudden after getting this Asus one started giving me the problems.

86% memory is fine, if it was sitting at 95 to 100% worry

It would help to know how you've set up the router. I have switched to the exact same model & no issues on Vumatel/Mweb. All I did was plug it in & change the wifi & admin password.

Why you giving me the price of bread when I'm asking about the weather?
My apologies, you are right. That was a terrible response from my end.

I removed the physical address line in above ipconfig results. I've also added the DNS Server and Primary WINS Server from Cloudflare's DNS last night only. So far no issues this morning.

I hope this helps to clarify something you wanted to see?

Strange.

When you connect the router, it gives you 2 options in the web GUI.

1. Add new connection
2. Advanced configuration

I've tried both options with same results. Also, with each new setup (from the total 4 I've done so far), I've made the router login and Wifi SSID names unique.

I did DNS flushing/renew/reset etc on the device and in Chrome's settings also.

Thats the one.

There should be an option to change the DNS settings in your DHCP settings.

Im also not sure about that WINS address. 1.0.0.1 looks sus.

My DNS doesnt point to the router at all in ipconfig /all

Yea, I can't find much info on the WINS, and perhaps didn't dig deep enough yet.

But did change the settings to this:
asus-rt-ac58u-v3-wan-settings.png

There's WAN - Internet Connection settings, and then there's LAN - DHCP settings.
Honestly a confusable GUI in some areas. These settings are like I had them before, and still had issues with it.

Did you perhaps update the firmware lately?

I didn't have to, because the version of the firmware already installed is actually later than the ones on Asus's support page. Strangely, the version applied on the router does not even show in the list on Asus's support page.

Firmware version
- Installed: 3.0.0.4.386_21649 (can't find this version online)
- Latest available online: 3.0.0.4.382.52405

Finally found it online, under the V3 router, which is the one I have. It's also the latest, which is already installed
