Asus router DNS errors

Finally found it online, under the V3 router, which is the one I have. It's also the latest, which is already installed

I would go to say if you are up for it to do a reset on the router and see if this makes any difference? Not sure if you want to go that route...

I don't mind, but the latest seems to be on the router already. Not even sure if firmware with same versions can be re-installed, and if it would even make a difference.

I'm just annoyed that for some the default setup works but others have issues. I always try to make it work through.

Seems like some countries have ONT specific setup directions also, but didn't see anything specific to any ONT devices we use.

The worst is that I need internet connection, and if I have to take it back to the retail store then I would appreciate walking out with a replacement and not needing to wait several business days.

Your options could be a bit different as not the same router and merlin software installed.

Appreciated. I've made everything auto again and just going to deal with whatever comes next. The retail store says an average wait time of 2 weeks can be expected to confirm whether the device is faulty or not. I'll try to get a different router over the weekend from a friend and see if the problem still persists, then take the router back for check-up.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll keep this thread updated!

This is why I'll never buy consumer grade hardware, one firmware update and then it never gets an update?

BS.

What does the router logs indicate when it drops? You can always change the log level to debug to get a idea what’s happening

It seems that whether it's a successful or unsuccessful connection, the log states "rc_service: watchdog 465:notify_rc start_dnsmasq"

Seems there might be a firmware version update coming soon, based on this forum: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asuswrt-merlin-386-10-beta-is-now-available-for-ac-models.83873/

Thanks. I looked at the status presented by the routers web GUI and for 2 devices running browser tabs consecutively, while one of them might be streaming Netflix, the router is running on 86% RAM usage. Now if that's the case of normal RAM usage for this router, then I'm afraid the RAM is too little. It has a total of 128MB. Seems low, but I don't know how it's consumed. I haven't watched the usage while playing online FPS games, but started getting some spikes the past few days.
128MB is really high. Most are 32MB

Thats more than enough ram for routing purposes.

Did you ever open SSH on your ASUS router?

I'm not afraid to admit I did, and stupidly I had a weak password (Not that weak, but on a password list somewhere), then my router was doing weird stuff.
Fast forward a few days of troubleshooting, my router was totally hacked and pwned, doing outbound DDOS attacks.

Yay!

With the trouble I had with this router so far and the frustration, I decided that I'm going to get a new router while this one goes back to the retail shop. While waiting for the new router to arrive today, I went through the router's settings again this morning because it started acting out again (usually after 2 days), and while checking every setting again I saw that a new firmware version was released just yesterday.

So far within the past 15min it's smoother and actually just feels like a nice router reboot, and all of a sudden there are a bit more settings added to the GUI.

The new router I bought is a TP-Link AX53 AX3000. From my past experience TP-Link's GUI's felt similar to D-Link's. With the new router technically being a better router, I decided to take the Asus router in for the check-up, get the feedback or replacement (if so) and then just sell it. I'd rather not have any future experiences like this again. lol

I have this same model as my main router and a TP-Link as a backup. If you give it a last chance, look for the Asuswrt Merlin firmware 388.1 release. No issues with this firmware release, and I use Google DNS.

Thanks for the reply. I got a call back today from the retailer and they said it's being replaced. Didn't get any specifics on what the problem was, but sounds like it could've been faulty.

I read about the wrt merlin firmware, but didn't dig to understand the details. I got a TP-Link AX53 AX3000 as a replacement, but didn't take the time to realize it doesn't have a USB port. Oh well, either way I'll be putting the replacement Asus router on Facebook Marketplace as soon as I get it - probably tomorrow.

Glad you got it sorted. May your router journey be smooth sailing from here on out :)
