Windows 10 is set to launch on 29 July 2015, and users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be able to redeem a free upgrade to the new version of the operating system during the first year after the launch.

... IIRC I got 13(?) stiffies, a CD and a thick manual for my bucks back then :)

While Microsoft is offering free Windows 10 upgrades to some customers, those who do not qualify or don’t redeem their upgrades in time will have to pay for the new operating system.
 
Those are really disappointing prices from Microsoft. The fact that it's free in the first year seemed to suggest that they're more interested in getting Windows 10 out there than fleecing consumers. Windows 8 Pro doesn't cost much more than the price listed for the standard Windows 10.
