Cellphone reception in my house is poor. So I've hung on to my Telkom line for the past few years, even though it's not value for money.

Now I want to test LTE + VOIP to see if it's a solid service. I already have an LTE router (B593) on loan. I can configure one of it's 2 voice ports. Or I can install a VOIP app on my Android phone.

But I also need a SIP account for a proper test. Does any of the service providers offer test accounts ? Or allow quick and easy web based ordering ?

Try voip.bluecloudpbx.com
Registration is free. Choose a sip account. They offer a few rands free airtime for testing.

FNB?

I use FNB Connect's voice account sometimes.
I am yet to see an easy sign up SIP account in SA.

Hi,

Do you only need it for testing the setup?
If so, I can help you, but for short time only

Was also looking for a test account. I just tried Callcentric (Thanks ColinR), and works great. Using a E5186 Router on TM Lte.

Also planning on going with a local supplier so that I can port my old Telkom number.
From what I hear the best options are Vox or switchtel. Anyone had any experience with either of them??

Ported my landline to switchtel 4 years ago, great reliable service.

I use Euphoria and FNB Connect at the moment. Both work great on my E5186 !

Thank you guys! Here's my evaluation of all the services you recommended:

bluecloudpbx: Website too incomplete, so I passed.

switchtel: Good website, but, at R50/m it's too expensive

cellcentrix: Signup was easy and voice is clear. But it's US based, so I'll only use it for testing.

Vox Telecom: Signup included 12 pages in my case. Plus 4 pages for porting from Telkom. I got the SIP account in 24 hours. They say the port can take 30 working days.

MWeb talk: I got a user name and password in 3 hours ([email protected]). Note that nnnnnnnn is the username and you omit the @mweb part when logging to their website. After accepting Ts&Cs, you get your SIP number and password by email.

Conclusion: MWeb Talk is the best (fastest and cheapest).

Does Mweb talk support SIP?

Also, can anyone recommend a good free windows and android SIP app that supports G729?
Most free applications don't seem to support this?

I ended up going for switchtel - yes, it is prob the most expensive @49p.m, but so far very happy with them!

Yes. You can use their Windows client.
I use the SIP client in my B593 router. I also use Android. See below.

Thanks AcidRaZor. Its just i find CSipSimple highly configurable and widely supported.

I did manage to get it working and I'll list the 3 methods,

Option 1
Create a Basic account with the following info:
Account name: Fill whatever you want in here
User: 27XXXXXXXXXXX (Yes you can use your geographic number!)
Server:196.28.95.12
Password: **************

Disadvantage - if they change the IP you are stuck between a rock and a hard place

Option 2
Create a Basic account with the following info:
Account name: Fill whatever you want in here
User: 27XXXXXXXXXXX (Yes you can use your geographic number!)
Server:sip.voip.mweb.net
Password: **************

Long press and change the account type to "Expert"
Scroll down until you find "Proxy URI"
change to "sip:sip.voip.mweb.net;hide"

Option 3
Create a new account; Select other country providers > MWeb
Account name: Fill whatever you want in here
User: 27XXXXXXXXXXX (Yes you can use your geographic number!)
Password: **************
(OK I'll admit there is an easy way and I chose the hard way instead - I hope this info can help someone else)

NBNB~!! Remember to select G729 under Settings > Media and deselect the other codecs!

+1 for mtalk

Be aware they do prioritise traffic on their own network that *may* affect call quality. I have tested across various ISP's and networks (lte, 3g, adsl, wisp) and found (unsurprisingly) that mweb adsl works best.

Send me a personal message and i will help you out if you have not already been helped.....
