Slow ADSL: what you can do about it

Id like to make my own RJ11 cable for my router using twisted pair, but finding RJ11 clips are an issue.

Here is what my mystery line has been doing to me lately, good looking ADSL stats but check the number of ADSL sessions i have accumulated so far this month.

Router stats

Sessions

Tried all sorts of things (port reset, different router, different cables, different filters, no filter, different landline phone, direct connection to jack) but still i get these disconnects some days more than others some maybe 2 sessions only and one of the worst was over 600 sessions in 1 day  . Have logged a number of tickets wit Telkom and still waiting for them to come look AGAIN. What could be going on with my connection

Oh and here is my dodge WinMTR, first 3 hops is my internal stuff, very high packet loss from the 4th (probably exchange) onward but i still managed to pull in more than 150Gigs whilst the line is in that state though i normally do much more. Line has been useful only for downloads but real time stuff is mostly  . What is going on

Edit: Added MTR results

this part has me confused.

Electric fences. A faulty security fence can cause impulse noise on an ADSL link. This will cause the line to run errors and drop intermittently. In severe cases the ASDL line will not sync at all. Check for any arcing from the fence due to cracked or faulty isolators, as well as for plants or any foreign objects touching the fence.

shouldn't it say something about if your ADSL line runs next to the electric fencing? cause i don't see how this is a problem if my line is 4 meters away from the electric fencing?

So, if anywhere in the 10km from me to the exchange there is an arcing fence? ........ **** :(

Is SNR and Attenuation measured by your home router or the exchange equipment (which then makes those stats available to your router)?

Also it would be interesting to see a direct comparison on how the different router brands / models perform against each other?

Both. You will see your router's results and the Telkom techies will see their system's own results.

... while connected to different exchange equipment. e.g. DSLAM, IMAX, MSAN, ISAM

Had a netgear n300 router for about 2 years, then about a year ago, my internet became crappy, multiple calls to telkom, some callouts etc .. no change .. eventually followed a few articles like these, and actually understood what SNR and attenuation meant. Allowed me to isolate my router as the cause of not being able to sync and better than 4 meg, despite numerous Telkom techies not being able to do the same.

1 X TPLink gigabit router purchase later, and a call to my ISP, and Im running super stable 20Meg copper .. winning at internet :)

RJ11 clips

Try Deal Extreme (DX.com). You will have to buy 100 (SKU 147305) and they will most likely take a while to get here though. Fortunately the Post Office is unlikely to steal such low value items. You can probably get a cheap crimping tool (RJ 11 and RJ45) at your local Chinese place that sells everything or also from DX.

What about the main issue: Exchange Congestion

i have to agree here. i strongly doubt that cabling and faulty routers (really - we are in 2015. equipment is much better quality than ten years ago)

my first line of troubleshooting is ALWAYS the ISP - 99% of the time it is some mess up on the shaping.

next i will maybe consider exchange congestion or check the router stats, depending on the duration of the issue experienced.

I had an issue with line sync speeds and for months I tried to debug it between telkom, mweb, telkom etc... Until one day.. a very helpful Telkom tech pitched up - replaced the line from my house to the pole.. nothing worked. He then asked if I had a cordless phone, this struck me as weird - I did. Long story short.. cordless phones eff up your sync speed because they require external power and that power bleeds into the phone line and messes up your ADSL sync speeds. FYI for anyone with a cordless phone is having sync issues.

End result - I threw the phone away and now I'm happy again.

p.s Lightning protection plugs also that take phone lines also tend to cause sync issues
