How much FTTH really costs to roll out to neighbourhoods

Okay... so that's the cable costs. Now for the other costs? And interesting that only DFA mentions the monthly maintenance cost... shows that Gustav knows what he's talking about.
 
When I was in Joburg recently I see most areas are hanging fibre above ground. They've even put separate poles into the pavement to hang the fibre.

Sounds like a cheap-n-dirty solution to me. How does it look?
The cables will last infinitely longer under ground.

Wonder how much it cost to roll out fibre for companies like Vodacom and Mtn since their also rolling fibre .

Cybersmart said the least they can charge for an installation is R1,500, but on average it costs closer to R5,000 to get fibre into a house

Interesting I wonder if Vumatel has the same overheads (they didn't mention) or if Laurie Fialkov is grossly overstating the cost as an excuse for a 24 month contract...
 
Interesting.So with Dark Fibre it would cost all but +- R631 125.00 to get it to run just outside my house.Must have look into that mybroadband "How to get fibre broadband rolled out to your neighbourhood" article again,someone seriously needs to take my money.:D

So why do we need to dig trenches to lay fibre? can't we do like in the old days and just hang the fibre off poles?

DFA only leases backbone fibre infrastructure to licenced telecommunications operators. We do not provide connectivity. Should you require connectivity you would have to contact an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for this service.

Yes, you can.

However certain sectors of our population do not want unsightly poles and cables in their neighbourhoods.

Governed or enforced by municipality by-laws?Was thinking street light poles.

And this makes the article about Telkom opening 200 exchanges even more intriguing... Are they hinting at facilities leasing? If so, then network operators can aply to lease space on Telkom's poles or in their ducts.
