Good Day

Any help with ADSL for gaming purposes will be greatly appreciated.

My scenario is as this: I order 10Mbps line with Telkom, had it for about a year, with no isses at all. I moved the line over to Afrihost and **** started, but I think the timing just sucks, because as I understand it. The line is still at Telkom.

My 10Mbs line connected with SNR over 20 DB and Attenuation 14.5db. This stats dropped and I synced around 6Mbps at my SNR was just over 6, so that was a clear cut. After 2 technicians, numerous phone calls, port regens and some line fixing, it seems to be up and running. I dropped the speed to 4Mbps for now to just be able to do anything. Below is my current stats, they keep around there all the time.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.5 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 28.1 db 12.0 db

If I do speedtests I get over 3.5Mbps and up I do 0.44Mpbs, jitter 7ms (So this seems what you would expect for a 4Mbps line)

So based on these, it seems fine, well my problem starts now. The games just dont perform to be competitive at all. I changed the routers, I tried moving it to another location, with or without surge protectors, different PCs as we have a network. This started in June

So I have tried numerous ISP, such as Afrihost, Axxess, Crystalweb, SOAL, Vox and at different times, mornings, weekends, during lucnh, late night after 24h. All feel the exact same, so not congestion. The game I am testing this on is a Blizzard game Heroes of the Storm, and and then suddenly it started while we been playing this 1 faithful day, there is a lot of jitter/spikes in my game. Checked in Diablo as well and similar ping over 700ms which I played for ages before. (Ping used to be around 200ms for Diablo in the ingame menu). So this is not usable at all and I tried to use my phone data and to my suprize it works perfecty (although data costs will really hurt in the long run)

If I use my phone as the data, it works smooth, no lag at all, so the servers I am connecting to seems fine and as I stated I did use the fixed line for a while as my gaming data and it was smooth sailing till the ice berg game.

I am out of options, is there any similar stories out there and what worked? I concluded, that something did happen as the line measurements were really bad for a few weeks, but after some Telkom interaction, the stats seem fine, but it is not as it should be, although normal internet seems to work decent enough for thie minimal time I spent on it (browsing, odd youtube video, Chive, all seems as normal).

Thank you in advance

Hi Psycho,

It seems you are sharing our problem, any chance that you are from the Pretoria (East) area?

Have a look at this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/715086-Next-step-to-resolve-latency

Good speedtests, okay line-stats, different isp's tested, confirmed telkom line issue and replacing it with mobile data solves the problem.

Hmmm what do you know, I do indeed live in Pretoria East.

So the good news is, it is just not me, the bad news is, there is no foreseeable solution...

Guess I'll will just join the bandwagon and keep pestering Telkom in regards to it. At least if I log a fault now on the telephone, directly after inputting my telephone number, there is a automated message stating that there is a general error in the area, so they are aware of something, been more than a month of that message though.

Telkom also phoned my yesterday and said they changed the DSLAM and are busy putting my line onto it. When I was home and tested, everything seems back in order and line working 100% for intended purposes.
