Vodacom Wi-Fi calling is live

All makes sense now, thought there was a catch somewhere:erm:

Calls made over a Wi-Fi network will be billed using existing minutes. No data costs will be incurred when making a Wi-Fi call.

Say what? If I have *** reception in my house but I'm on my wifi which uses my ADSL.. will my calls then route over my DSL? How are they going to tell my ISP not to bill me for this data?

Or have I got it all wrong.

I believe when they mean WiFi they don't mean user-accessible Wifi but rather a background function of the technology.

I see.. clearly something new - not sure how a remote location would have WiFi coverage but not voice.

Data is usually cheaper then your call rates Vodacom
 
something i am still confused about is why os this not a built in function of the newer android phones? why is it manufacturer and software update dependant? Same goes for volte.

Pathetic! Thankfully most of my friends have Whatsapp voice calling.

Pretty sure it's any wifi connection. There is an evaluation of network vs cellular and then the call is switched to either. Essentially the networks then pay less for bandwidth and 'air rental' or medium used during the call cost thus it should be cheaper as your part of the connection is not via cellular.

And yes this means you paying for the data not some special freebie. So the network scores where one or both parties are in a wifi zone and the wifi quality can handle the call.. (then just switching call via national network so essentially priority quality Skype/Whatsapp without the voice quality you find on those haha).

I think the real beauty for consumers come when traveling abroad. There is no roaming cost for the call(made or recved) via wifi and charged at standard rates.

Your Vodacom voice minutes are deducted. I'm sure your Wi-Fi usage is billed as per normal. Overseas will be a massive benefit (no need to go onto voice roaming) and if you battle with indoor voice coverage you will score too

Exactly.. I don't remember any operator passing the benefits of cheaper calls via wifi down anywhere and thankfully on the roaming side they have
