ShowMax in SA: this is how it works

So if I stream via my internet connection will it be zero rated cause it won't be a viable option for me if my data gets eaten by streaming ShowMax movies or tv series.

I know someone who use to have a library with about 650 complete tv shows from the past few years, and about 3200 yify movies. They switched over to Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Prime and dropped almost everything.

You can have up to five devices registered simultaneously to an account

Even on premium you can't add more that 2 devices. Their support is awful, they don't see the problem, say we must just remove a device and add another, now explain that to the SO.

Why would they need to have servers all over the world if Showmax is only available in South Africa?

ShowMax plans to release four or five series that are not on TV in South Africa, and which will be exclusive to its platform

Bet many here have watched them already :)

Well No, who would pay the ISP?.

They could do it if they had partner ISPs they owned (like MWeb)

I tried Showmax over the weekend and im definately cancelling my dstv indefinately.
Only problems i have currently is my TV is not a smart tv and I have to use a laptop to stream which sucks.
I have an AppleTv but apple airplay only transfer the sound and not the image so thats a bust.
Looking forward to Showmax fixing Airplay and making available an app on AppleTv and Roku.
Im with you Showmax until Netflix comes that is unless my wife start watching SOuth African content, then ill probly keep both.

ShowMax will also continue to get a wide selection of shows from studios like HBO – something Netflix won’t offer.
Does ShowMax have any of the shows Netflix produces? I'm thinking of shows like OITNB, Daredevil, Sense8, etc.

At launch, ShowMax had around 750 different series – with 850 complete seasons and 19,000 episodes, which comes to over 11,000 hours of viewing time.
They've got a fair way to go to catch up with Netflix and their 13590 titles.

No, they don't. Solution is to have both Netflix and ShowMax. Still much cheaper than DStv.

If you think Showmax is the answer to DSTV, your mind will be blown by Netflix. Showmax is utter crap. Quality is shyte, sound doesn't sync correctly, interface is shyte, can only be watched on one device and the list goes on and on. Get Unotelly and sign up to Netflix. Thank me later.

I'd probably sign up if it worked and if a Roku app was available.

Showmax: Meh.

Show me the HD!!!
I have been following the other Showmax threads and the video quality/resolution of appalling. Even on fast connections.
Thanks, but no thanks.

Kevin Lancaster: How about doing a proper follow up article about the quality and other problems that real users have? I have read the MyBB review which claimed a fairy tale 720p resolution, but I don't believe that for one second. The feedback on the Showmax thread is conclusive that the resolution is well below 720p on a normal connection.

Just a note: both ShowMax and Netflix have Smart TV apps, but you can't get the ShowMax app and the Netflix app on the same TV due to regional restrictions.

EDIT: unless you are willing to "experiment" with your TV's firmware (I am not that brave)

I have asked Jan to please follow up on the sound sync issue. Nothing happened. I just cancelled my auto sub and let the 7 days run out. No way I'm paying for that shyte.

I have my Auto DNS setup in D-link router with Unotelly and Netflix. Once-off setup is a bit tricky but anybody who is able to google can do it in no time at all. It is really not that daunting and once it all works there is no looking back! Put in the time and little bit of effort to get Netflix working and it kicks butt.

How it works:

Step 1: You give Naspers money

Step 2: Naspers laugh all the way to the bank
