Subtle hand gestures of the number three were common practice at the ANC Youth League congress in Midrand, Johannesburg at the weekend.

Some have speculated the three fingers symbolised a third term for Jacob Zuma – an assertion the ANC and the ANCYL leadership has downplayed.

Addressing the media on Sunday, newly elected ANCYL president Collen Maine told the media that he was merely imitating what the delegates were doing and that the media should not read too much into it.

"There are delegates from various provinces and there are various signs used in congress. Other delegates will make this sign, others will make that and some will clap hands, so we cannot ask them why they are doing that.

"We were just joining delegates who were singing. It [the three fingers] mean nothing,” said Maine when asked why he used the sign.

On Tuesday provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the party drew no conclusion from the signs used at the congress.

"In the ANC we do not discuss issues through signs, we openly debate through processes."

Zikalala said the signs do not represent anything to the party.

"The issues of leadership in the ANC are not discussed through signs but through the eye of the needle and in the meetings of the ANC."

On a third term for President Jacob Zuma, he said: "We have not expressed ourselves yet on the matter, we will discuss that when we get to the discussion of documents at the PGC.

"...In terms of the ANC’s constitution, when we go to conference we always discuss the constitution of the ANC and I don’t think the ANC constitution has terms.

"The question of terms does not arise. The ANC resolution in terms of the constitution states that the person who is the president of the ANC should be the president of the country and that is the policy of the ANC on the issue."

What kind of leader imitates the crowd without knowing what it means?

They could be referring to a third term as the ANC's leader.

O right :o

But how would that work though? Isn't the leader of the ANC the President or can they have an ANC leader and a separate President then.

(No idea how this works :o

In theory the ANC doesn't have a limit, but they had a resolution in 2007 that the president of the ANC must also be the president of the country to avoid creating two centres of power. That was in response to what was as Mbeki trying to rule the country by installing a puppet in the union buildings and pulling the strings from Luthuli house.

Which is what JZ will have to accomplish to keep his ass out of jail -if he doesn't somehow wangle a third term as SA president.
(He's "accommodated" so many of the cadres that they will feel "obligated" to sort him out -if this should come to pass...I reckon.)

EDIT: Staying anc president will, literally, be his get-out-of-jail card.

What is the positive about this? The "worse" that will follow him inevitably will be pushed back another 4 years?

If he could do this what would stop him from doing what Mugabe did?

Yip.. I doubt he can find a favourable person to release the reigns on so have little doubt he will continue to run as ANC head and then install a muppet as president, to protect himself from litigation.

In SA, we vote for parties, not persons which is extremely problematic in instances likes this and the ANC is allowed to do this sadly.

They discuss leadership through the eye of a needle.....no wonder they making such terrible choices lately....

It won't work well. Two centres of power never work well. This is an attempt to keep Cyril and his slate out of senior ANC leadership positions. A plan that's been hatched by the so called "Premier league". So far it seems to be working. Maine and Bathabile Dlamini have been elected in influential positions with the sole idea of maintaining control of power in the Zuma camp. Apparently Cyril will stop the "eating" when he becomes President so getting rid of him is the ultimate plan.

Exactly. Mbeki tried to keep out the crazies by trying to have influence from Lithuli house. It seems Zuma is trying to stay out of jail using the same means.

Yes Zuma was part of the faction which brought the resolution to not allow two centres of power to develop. So, the best way he avoids ending up with a faction hostile to him in power is NOT seeking any sort of third term. An attempt at a third will have most of his allies turning on him and then risking a hostile faction taking over. So what he'll do is play nice and ensure that the way is paved for his own faction to takeover and keep his puppets in the NPA, police, concourt, etc in their positions (and replaced with same when the time comes).
