Made a guide how to get showmax to work on MXQ tv box. Chipset s805.

You will need an sd card, usb mouse and usb keyboard for this guide. You could use a flash drive also.

First you need to gain root access to the tv box by doing the following:
Download link : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0By9il_zUC9ZvXy1wcDJ1N1dtMHc/view?usp=sharing
1)Download this zip file and put it on a SDcard. DO NOT unzip it.
Note: It may work on the internal SDcard but I did not test it as you cant write to it from the PC as this ROM does not support Mass Storage. Could use flash drive also.
2) Put the SDcard into the tv box SD slot.
3) Go into your settings , system settings then update.
4) In the update tool click the "select" button. It should list the file s89_root_update.zip. Click it.
5) Now press the update button.
6) The system should reboot into recovery and automatically install the zip.
However sometimes it reboots to the recovery menu! Not sure why.
If it does, then using the mouse, select "Apply updated from EXT"
Now select SDcard. You should see the s89_root_update.zip file. Select it.
Recovery will then install the update. It will then reboot, after that switch off the tv box and then remove the power cord and then plug it back in and switch it on. You are done with this part now.

2. Next you need to download some apps from the playstore. You will need to download supersu . Open up supersu and it will ask you to update the binary files, select normal recovery as the option and let it run. It will reboot the tv box also. Then you need to download root browser also.

3. Open up root browser application and do the following:
Go to the system folder and look for the build.prop file.
Open that file and find media.amplayer.widevineenable=false and change it to media.amplayer.widevineenable=true.
After that save the file and switch off the tv box and pull out the power cord.

Plug it back in and switch it on and showmax will work.

Hi Gtx Gaming,

I have a rooted MXQ-4K Tv Box running Android 5.1. I installed the Showmax app and when I run the app it gives a warning that the device might not be compatible. The app does run and I am able to select a program/movie but upon selecting it starts to load and never finishes. I get a turning blue circle and it does not complete.

I entered the line "media.amplayer.widevineenable=true" in the build.prop file but it did not make a difference.

Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello

I had the same problem with that tv box. Seems chipset problem or something ,had few guys trying to help me fix it .

I was reading somewhere that the newer versions of Android lock down the DRM protection quite hectically.

Thanks for the response guys.

Would I at least be able to cast Showmax from my phone to this device?

And there I went and stuff up my TV box. Something went wrong with the build.prop file and now it won't boot, it hangs at the android screen. Best of all, I did not make a backup. I've tried reset factory setting, wipe cache, etc. Do any of you guys know where I could find a firmware image for this? I was thinking of using the Rockchip Create Upgrade tool to create an SD bootable image. This seems to be the least effort option. Any ideas?

I bought it from Groupon 2 weeks ago, the MXQ-4K. I see today they have the MXQ Pro 4K and it supports Showmax. How does the 2 devices differ? Seems like they have the same internals.

Great post but what else can be done with the box except enabling it to watch Showmax?

I would've thought that getting an el cheapo Chromecast plug and play is the way to go.

Hi lhve the problem the TV box it doesn't showing swhowmax but in my phone is workng
