Raspberry Pi 3 now available in South Africa – price, details

Ok, done a bit of playing around, 6 or so years ago with PIC, which is better? Why not use one or the other?

PIC has very different applications - it's more comparable to the Arduino. The Pi is almost a complete PC with decent amount of RAM, CPU, GPU, etc. The difference is you have to boot up the OS and shut it down when done on the Pi, but you can do a heck of a lot with it.

Arduino is like simplified PIC with more features depending on the model. Simplified meaning easier to learn.

Once again RRP is $35 even at our terrible exchange rate thats still not R650, RS SA is doing the same with the RPi2 where you can get them from china with free shipping for significantly cheaper,, so they quite literally get shipped from the UK to China, and then to SA for cheaper than it costs to buy it directly from RS so what gives?

Also where is the Zero , I would rather buy 6x Zeros for R100 each than one Pi3 from RS.

$35 = +-R575 so after VAT I rate RS is making about 10% profit after shipping etc. Not bad, and much faster than waiting for China and customs.

I've been generally happy with RS, other than their stock availability not always matching the site. Delivery is quick though.
 
I would still prefer the Up-board, since its x86 64bit and the system bus is 2.5Gbit/s compared to the 300mbit of the Pi since Gen 1.

Its twice the price. but much more flexible.

They underestimated demand for the Zero. Only had 100 000 ready for launch, which all sold out in like a day or something. They then sold another 100 000 over the next couple of months. More are filtering through slowly (Pimoroni has some, but only in their most expensive kit :(

Oh yes, apparently RS Components worldwide are refusing to sell the Zero cos the margin would be too low. So that doesn't help.

Back on topic - the Pi3 looks almost perfect to replace my aging Media PC - not quite 100% on H265, but better than what I have now

We have been struggling like mad to get our hands on any Zeros, had a direct chat with Liz Upton, says they will only really release bulk to us once they have satisfied the urgent rush in Europe and the US (I'm paraphrasing of course).

We sold out of Raspberry Pi 3's in spectacular fashion today, we have 100 more on the way that should reach us by the end of the week (read early next week knowing customs), retail price R749 incl vat (we hope this price will come down as the quantities made available to us increase, price is usually high for initial launch, if the exchange rate plays nice, this will look better in the future)

I understand it's not exactly comparable, but I'm waiting or looking for a supplier to bring in the Kangaroo 4GB mini-PC .. anyone know of a supplier doing so, already ?

Hey Guys, anyone order from RS often? Know if they tend to deliver faster than their stated times - ie, do they do a Takealot and quote maximum delivery time, then deliver sooner?, or am I stuck waiting a few more days for my Pi3

I ordered on Monday morning, the stated delivery was 4-6 days, I got delivery confirmation for next Monday.
 
This one looks so good for what you're paying for. Does anyone know whether you'll be able to add an Xbox wireless USB receiver to it? Would love a media/retro gaming center connected to the TV.

yeah, mine said about the same - 7 March. Bummer, their website implied sooner, on the product page. (wishful thinking I guess - used to Takealot)
