DStv prices – 2000 to 2016

Notices that there is also a BoxOffice rental of R35 per month included. Was never informed of that!

How about an article detailing the excuses over the years? Off the top of my head I can recall exchange rates and operational costs...

Dear DSTV,

I canceled my Premium subscription yesterday. (Anyone want a DSTV Explora??)

There are many reasons, but main ones are:

* There is a lot of content which is either outdated (repeats) or supports the viewing preferences of a VERY different demographic.
* I am offended when you consistently insult the intelligence of your premium subscribers (not going into detail here).
* Bad design / user experience of your end user systems.
* High price which I expect is because of cross subsidising viewers on cheaper packages.
* I don't need to watch TV, I can entertain myself.
* Sport has degenerated into a soap opera and lost my interest years ago.

I clearly no longer fall into your target market and I cannot justify subsidising other viewers. I am under no disillusion, I am just one meaningless subscriber to you, but I suspect that you may not realise just how many of your premium subscribers (bar the sports nuts) share these views.

Unless you seriously re-think your content strategy, I suspect you will loose many more premium subscribers.

Some suggestions:

Maybe you could start increasing the costs of the other packages to offset the exit of the premium subscribers?

Increase the Premium pricing even more to make up for the exit of the premium subscribers? (don't try this folks, it's a SARS trick)

Or maybe let me pay for what I use? Like the cellphone companies do... Allocate my monthly subs to "airtime" and deduct what I actually watch from the "airtime balance".

Good luck, but count me out.

Thank you for sharing your views Duan. I am also not a subscriber to the premium bouquet for very much the same reasons. I subscribe to the EasyView package which has actually decreased in price - I think they realise that the little content is only worth R29. I keep my Explora because I like to upgrade in the event of big sporting events like a World Cup or Wimbledon. When the event is over, I downgrade again. There is one thing I disagree with and that is "Bad design / user experience of your end user systems". I think the user interface on the Explora is actually very good and easy to use. Maybe you can elaborate more why you say so.

Also downgrading to Family package as kids watch cartoons etc but even that is dull and overpriced, might just get Easyview to keep account open.

Interesting graph:

As I mentioned in another DSTV thread recently, a comprehensive TV package that includes HD sport costs more in the US and UK than it does here.

DSTV is still decent value for money if you watch lots of sport. The problem is that DSTV doesn't let you scale the cost back if you aren't into sport the same way that you can in the US and UK (and wherever else).

DSTV is Supersport with some extras thrown in. If you aren't a sports nut then don't waste your money. Spend the money on a better internet connection and some combination of Netflix, Hulu, ShowMax, UnoTelly etc.

I've moved to Easyview, effective month end, might splash out for the the olympics in August though, unless I can find that elsewhere.

It will be available via BBC.

I cancelled DSTV 2 years ago never looked back , now using Netflix (much better value for your money) on my uncapped internet line
We had a forum at work out of 400 staff members 205 staff members canceled their DSTV subscription in the last year and another 58 members have canceled this week.

One almost starts to feel sorry for DSTV... Hmm nope...

The interface may look nice, but the experience of using it to achieve a goal is horrible. I think that their thinking is stuck in a mindset of 10-15 years ago where the TV schedule ruled our lives. Netflix understands that it is about what I like and they focus on making that available to me.

It is about the experience, not about the system or the constraints or challenges that DSTV has.

The experience leaves me cold.

Even then how much sport can you watch live when its convenient for you?

I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking how much sport watching one family can possibly manage, the answer is a lot.

If the keyword was live, well it doesn't need to be live with the number of repeats. If the keyword was convenient, it is always convenient with PVR.
