Maria Sharapova has been suspended from tennis after revealing she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open.

The International Tennis Federation announced a provisional suspension starting 12 March after the 28-year-old staged a news conference to make public the failed test.

Sharapova explained she had tested positive for meldonium, a substance prescribed by her family doctor since 2006.

Meldonium, which is designed to boost metabolism and endurance, and has been used in the treatment of angina, was added to the prohibited list on 1 January.

Jip, not that big a scandal. No need to overreact.

Half the times that athletes have failed drug tests, have been due to small things picked up. Equally banned, but nevertheless. Then of course it's "xx tests positive" and it all gets blown out of perspective.

Tough one that. Good on her for taking responsibility for looking at the list of prohibited substances herself...often athletes come out after a positive test and say it was a doctor who prescribed it or something.

28 is already pretty old for a female tennis player :(

A bit harsh, since its a recent addition give a bit of a grace period for the new addition to set in. But also, any pro athlete should know that taking medication is dangerous, and they all have team doctors or some kind of medical staff involved all over. Seen it locally as well. Taking something for a stomach problem and you test positive for a banned substance. But it doesn't matter what Maria takes, I'll rather feel her than feel sick... lol

There shouldn't be a list. Simple as that.

REally? If you want to see the damage steroids etc does, look at the WWE etc wrestlers. They hardly make it to 60. They die young because of all their steroid taking.

Sharapova Suspended After Failing Drugs Test

Why is the chairperson of the Women's Tennis Association, a man?

As do I.
Nike dropped her and I am so angry at them for that - but it's one of the reasons I'll never support NIKE - This is not another "Lance Armstrong" issue. KARMA Nike... Karma!
PR is black and white

I just love WADA. It so nice of them to do research and keep a list of stuff that does work.

Meldonium looks interesting, currently reading some studies. It may even increase learning and have an interesting method of action. "These biomarkers included glutamic acid decarboxylase 65/67 (GAD65/67), acetylcholine esterase (AChE), growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) and the transcription factor c-jun/activator protein-1 (AP-1)".

I think she needs a good spanking, and I will volunteer to undertake this task.

Not usually inclined to feel sympathy for people caught doping but this is harsh. She is showing a lot of class by taking full ownership of the mistake, hopefully they will show some lenience.
