Am I right that you have to have base software like Adobe in order to make use of this?

No, you can use them as standalone apps or in conjunction with PS, Lightroom, Apterture, etc.

Suite, and yes. Very good. Especially if you're interested in B&W. Silver Efex Pro is probably the best there is.

The colour editing one is also very good and highly regarded, used it yesterday and it's pretty amazing.

Indeed it is.

Af far as noise reduction software goes Dfine is also superb.
