Hi all,

Our ADSL line has been a big bucket of fail for the past few months and I've had enough.

I've submitted a coverage request via WAPA and received quotes from:

  1. Sonic Wireless
  2. Kabtech
  3. Amobia (but won't consider them after reading these forums)

I have some questions I'm hoping you guys can help answer please:

1. Are there any other WISPs I should consider?

2. Has anyone used Kabtech before? I could only find a really old thread on them.

3. Sonic looks like a solid option - but I understand they lock you out of the wifi router meaning only they can change the wifi key etc., is this true, and anything to be concerned about?

Thanks a lot. Looking forward to stable internet again.

Not sure about 1 or 2 so can't comment on those.
3. When they come install you can ask them to not lock you out. I have access to my router.

Note that their service is unshaped with a FUP of 200~300GB. I average 200~250GB and haven't experienced any shaping/throttling (even during office hours).

As per henry & wills replies Sonic would be your best option. I`m in the Steenberg area & my connection is rock solid with consistent DL & UL speeds on my meager 5mbps line.

As for router lock out ask them not to lock you out as henry said, I have full control over mine.

Thanks a lot for the replies so far!

Sonic is definitely a contender then.

@MDE: ISPAfrika's pricing looks really good, better than Sonic, and their fibre feedback here seems good but I couldn't find much feedback here about their WISP offering - are you using them?

ISPAfrika offer access in Steenberg /Tokai/Kirstenhof and Claremont last I checked.
They came and did a site visit which consisted of wandering around on my roof and decided that they couldn't see either of their high sites because of trees.
No remedial action, no talk of lifting the receiver. They came across as indifferent.
Pity because the speed/price is very good

An update:

I contacted ISPAfrika and they promptly came to do a site survey two days later (to be fair I did originally contact them at 10pm) & confirmed I had LoS. Garth was very prompt to answer my (many) queries.

I placed the order last Friday afternoon and they did the install this afternoon.

Their pricing is very competitive - I signed up for their uncapped 5mbps (symmetrical, oh yeah!) service for R499/month and the install was only R999 (without a wifi router) and it's all month-to-month.

So far I'm impressed.

Would telkom LTE not have been a better option? Thats if you have telkom LTE signal.

Thanks but we don't have coverage, plus from what I found online their pricing is more expensive for 50GB vs ISPAfrika's uncapped
