Google unveils new video calling app

That is the good thing with hangouts though, the simplicity. Guess I'll give Duo a try anyway.

Maybe hangouts is getting replaced?

I doubt that Hangouts is going anywhere, it is bundled within Gmail and is a business tool. In my opinion they are looking at their targets, where Hangouts may be reinvented as they have already done in the past with Google Talk. It is a bigger question where Google Messenger is heading as Allo and Duo are more competitive in the consumer market. Why need a SMS and MMS replacement when the two technologies are on their knees, kept alive by desperate telecoms?

Then again, Google has always been reinventing their Google Services.

Is Allo not the Google Messenger replacement?

Why so many different apps when Hangouts does it already.

I want less apps not more.

Thought Google Talk was long dead?

I dont know, but Google said they will anounce the SMS replacement that will use RCS, so seeing that this is the only messaging app they anounced, I assume Allo is the replacement?

True, they did say that the Google RCS app will not replace Hangouts or be part within Google Plus. They did state however to clean up Hangouts by removing the SMS and MMS capabilities, which is in my opinion a very good move.

Google did not say anything about Allo being SMS and MMS compatible, according to my knowledge. Interesting though, they had been hamming on how “Fragmented” their social apps are, now they added another two without being clear where the other social apps will be ending up… in the bin or in the works…

Hangouts is simply too heavy, it is a good enterprise product though… and should battle it out with Skype over the long-term. However, there are many alternatives.

Google Talk is what the Labs turned into Hangouts.

Heavy how? I think it's the most simplistic and multi platform solution of the lot.

Now Skype. That's a heavy and slow piece of ****.

I wish someone would build a middleware that just lets anything talk to anything. Make it about the clients not the protocols.
