The Datsun Redi-GO has been launched in India at a price of between Rs. 2.39 - 3.34 lakhs (ex -Delhi).

What you'll like:

• Funky styling! Looks great for an entry-level hatchback
• Value-for-money pricing. Starts lower than the Maruti Alto
• 799 cc petrol has good driveability & sufficient pep for the city. Fuel-efficient too
• 185 mm of ground clearance! Suspension's behaviour is well-suited to a city hatchback
• Tallboy interior offers high seating, supportive seats, decent space & a powerful air-conditioner
• 222 litre boot is more accommodating than the Alto's (177 litres)
• Warranty can be extended to 5 years / unlimited kms
• Equipment in a budget car (driver's airbag, DRLs, full MID, ICE remote & more)

What you won't:

• The superior Renault Kwid is priced only slightly higher
• 3-cylinder engine vibrates excessively (especially when idling) & sounds unpleasant (as the revvs climb)
• Mediocre highway performance & behaviour. Best driven <100 km/h
• Body-coloured metal inside the cabin looks really bad
• Missing essentials (internally adjustable ORVMs, central locking, keyless entry, retractable rear seatbelts)
• Cost cutting is evident in some areas (single wiper, 3 lugnut wheels, small 28L tank etc.)
• No 1.0L engine variant like the Alto K10 & Eon 1.0
• Nissan-Datsun's dealer & after-sales network is far weaker than that of Maruti or Hyundai

Brand Datsun was reincarnated in 2013, only for developing markets (primarily India and Russia). They sell 4 cars internationally (GO, GO+, on-DO and the mi-DO), with India getting the first two and now, the Redi-GO. All 3 cars so far have the “GO” nomenclature.

The GO failed to make an impact in the market, despite its low pricing and decent on-paper specs. Datsun realised that cheap, bare bones cars don't sell in India. The excessive cost cutting, poor build quality and unfamiliar brand found no takers in India.

The terrible Global NCAP crash test scores and their specific suggestion to withdraw the car made matters worse. It was a forgettable start for Datsun India.

Back to the drawing board & here is strategy v2.0. Better styling, more amenities & an effort to conceal the cost cutting as much as possible.

The Redi-GO shares its CMF-A platform with the successful Renault Kwid. Their mechanicals are more or less the same (including the engine), yet the two are different.

While the Kwid looks like a scaled down tiny SUV, the Redi-GO is designed as an urban car with a tallboy design. The 185 mm of ground clearance is impressive and you can bet that Datsun will use it as a selling point.

Nissan SA should bring it to SA asap & price it keenly to supplement the local Datsun range. Having only 1 model range is sucky...

Just ask Dodge

It doesn't look too bad, but I dislike the cream coloured interior that most Indian-spec vehicles come with.

The front window controls beneath the handbrake and the covered-up holes where the manual window winders were also look tacky, but for the price point I guess it's easy to overlook a few flaws here and there

I don't regard any car which is close to R100k as cheap, it will still be expensive mediocrity like the first GO.

• Mediocre highway performance & behaviour. Best driven <100 km/h

That just wont do in SA. A lot of people commute to work on the highways.

You can always opt for one of these five 'Accessory Packs' from Datsun, for your new Redi-GO, in order to 'gild the turd' and make it stand out from the rest of the econobox herd in the office car park.

1. Easy Kit - Sporty

2. Easy Kit - Premium

3. Kool Kit

4. Urban Kit

5. Style Kit

With high probability of life threatening injuries the RediGO achieves one star - GlobalNCAP

The RediGo achieved just one star for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The RediGo offers only a driver frontal airbag as standard.

Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable.

Head protection for driver was adequate due to steering wheel displacements. Head protection for passenger was good. Driver and passenger neck protection was good.

Chest protection was poor for the driver and marginal for the passenger . The poor protection of the driver chest means that there is a high probability of life threatening injuries.

Poor protection for any of the critical body regions, in this case the chest, limits the star rating to one star for the adults.

The RediGo does not offer Seat Belt Reminders (SBR) in the front seats and, even if it had, the result would remain a single star. SBR points are limited as the chest is brown or red.

Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly because of the contact of the head of the 18 month old with the front seat and for the exposed head of the 3 year old dummy during the impact.

The static rear 3 point belts created difficulties in the proper and safe installation of a CRS. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 point belts with automatic retractors for all occupants.

Datsun redi-GO Gets 1 Star Crash Test Score - carandbike

Datsun India’s entry level redi-GO hatchback has got a meagre one star rating for safety from Global NCAP. The car scored low in both adult and child seat protection.

The redi-GO has received safety updates in recent days, and the car tested was a model manufactured prior to these updates.

TBH, many economy cars are build very cheaply.

when you drive one of these cars, one thing you must remember, if you need to be careful.

just like the old Tazz and Citi golf,
and lots of people drove those and survived perfectly well.

just keep that in mind when your driving around.

Sadly the people that buy this are those that know little about cars, and then they die.

Ill rather buy an old Yaris, they had stellar safety records. the first super mini to ever get a 5 star rating.
