Super Rugby TV, fan viewership plummets

Up until Round 9 of this year’s competition, viewership figures decreased by 3.8 million viewers compared to the same stage four years ago.
According to a local rugby boss - who wished to remain anonymous - the struggling economy, several top players plying their trade overseas and the transformation issue all play a part in the lack of interest in the competition.

IMO too much rugby and transformation (politics).

This while the sponsorship contributions are on the rise. Not to mention how much they speculated the TV rights to be in 2020...

"the transformation issue" <-- How in the world would this have any relevance on whether or not people are watching the rugby? I'm pretty sure it is more a case of rugby fatigue than anything else!

Nope. Selectors bias and idiots playing who do not deserve to be in the team while others are sidelined are the main reason for me.

Me too.

When sport, team and player decisions are made on the basis of sociological or political criteria and not performance and form, the whole point of sports competition collapses.

Also, the SupeRugby tournament has become too large, too complex, too byzantine, and goes on for too long.

I love Rugby, but am losing interest in SupeRugby.

The 30 odd thousand at Ellis Park on Saturday did not seem to phased by it :)

Yah well, it is going to expand again, and again.

If you want to people to watch then put it on a channel that everyone can get.

Super Rugby is only on Super Sport and only on the premium package, premium packages are on the decline.

People dont watch.... because its BORING. The quality of rugby is so diluted right now, for the sake of $$$$$$

;) and Sky TV had an increase in Super Rugby viewership.

I cried when they killed the Currie Cup for the Super 24 or whatever it is the season after next. And now rugby has eaten itself.

Super rugby has simply become meaningless at the expense of the old rivalries that made the CC the best domestic competition in the world.

And now that I got rid of DStv, I don't even bother looking for a pub or a stream for 9/10 of the games.

It is damn expensive to watch rugby in SA. Tickets (incl. transport to venue), DSTV Premium is expensive. Yes, the competition has grown too vast to be manageable, and there had been contributions to this as listed in the article, as per SA,

- Struggling economy,
- Players trading their skilsl abroad and
- Politics in sports.

The Aussies wants one Australian team out and SANZAAR wants to promote SA sports policies and by this to include an additional SA Super Rugby Team. New Zealand has a good balance, but they also have the quality to promote the balance.

Australia and New Zealand has acknowledged that the competition must grow positively, whereby the Argentinians and Japanese has been included to promote Super Rugby in South America and Asia. SA played a huge role here.

Here is the dilemma. Less teams, more quality. More continents, more travel. Etc.

Super Rugby is likely to expand again in 2018, looking at including the Singapore Dragons and a promoted Americas Rugby Championship country which is to be USA, Canada or Uruguay. By 2020 there will be an introduction to team relegation… This is per my speculation.

This factors in...Sharks have been playing poop so I haven't wasted Saturday evenings on them. I'm sure Lions fans must be tuning in quite happily.

Yep. There were about 20+ supporters in the stands between BlueBulls and Boland. In fact there were more supporters at schools rugby in my young days.

I love rugby and I organise MyGaming's Superbru and if even I have been thinking of dropping DSTV then lots of people will.

Super Rugby isn't what it used to be. Too many teams. Too diluted and the New Zealanders so far in front of anyone else that it makes for really boring rugby. With all the players leaving South Africa, our rugby has become a sad state of affairs. Well bar the Lions who mind you aren't currently making the rugby quota target. Which brings in politics. Best players or it becomes a joke. Especially at Springbok level.

All the political interference makes my blood boil and will be my biggest deciding factor on whether I will continue subscribing to DSTV.

I watch about 10% of what I use to watch four years ago...

Tend to find the rugby boring these days..... especially SA teams, same modus operandi..... Bashing away and then kicking the ball away...

I am not one for football, but I watched the Wales Belgium game by sheer chance last week.... WoW! That was entertaining....

Nailed the 2 reasons I'm not watching any more rugby involving SA.

Politics are obvious, but with Super Rugby it feels like it's too diluted and the format is crazy and unbalanced. I long for the days of Super 12 (and to a lesser extent 14) where you wake up on a Saturday and you know there will be 5/6 strength vs. strength matches in a row.

Since about 2013 I only bothered watching Bulls matches.
