So I finally get to setting up my PLEX server last night, and then I realise that the geniuses at SV are running a "Double-NAT" setup

According to my router, my public IP is 192.168.102.101 (obviously not very public in that IP Range). When I go to WhatIsMyIP.com the adress reported is 197.214.117.130

Now I obviously dont control the firewall or port forwarding on that IP and as such am stuck having to deal with the incompetence that is SV support...

Hi Mic, which estate are you in?

Im in Upper Eastside (Woodstock)... Can't I get another ISP?   PBCool help a brother out ;)

I will see what I can do and get back to you mic_y

It may be worth asking if SV will give you a free static IP , its something we do but mabe you can twist their arm as it will solve your issue or maybe Paul from Cool Ideas can help you .

Alternatively you can can tunnel out to a host that then has a public IP you can control.

So, I did a bit of research and digging in the network this weekend, and found out an interesting little thing: all the apartments have the same public IP address (checked with 3 of my neighbors and its always the same 197.x.x.x address). Is this not a contravention of some ISPA rules/regulations?

What happens if someone is flagged for downloading torrents? How do they tie it back to a specific user as to the external world we are all one user?

You all have one identical IP?

I was with SV for a bit. The estate acts as a local network with one fat pipe out to the world. For some reason that isp was horribly slow with porn sites. Meh.

yup yup, due to SV running one gateway with NAT. When initiating a PPP connection the router gets assigned an IP address in the 192.168.X.X range. Using whatismyip.com I checked in 3 different flats and the public/external IP is always the same (197.X.X.X). There is no possible way that this can be legal.

So, after a lot of back and forth, I have decided to bite the bullet and get a static IP from SV as this seems like the only possible solution. Luckily its only R30 a month extra (on an already overpriced connection).
