So today I found out Telkom is blocking NNTP servers. Mine stopped working on Friday, I contacted my Service provider and they suggested I test with a different ISP. I created a free test account on Web Africa and true as bob as soon as I switched over my my NNTP server kicked in and started downloading.

I give @Telkosa a call and ask if they are blocking NNTP sites and they do not even have a clue what I am talking about

I take the Softcap packages so the I can have unshaped internet, just to find that they are blocking certain content.

Am I the only one that is having this problem according to my NNTP service provider Telkom is also cracking down on P2P, but can not confirm this.

So my option is to move to another ISP,

Setup a cheap VPS, install Shadowsocks.
Install Shadowsocks locally, config with your VPS.
Connect to your NNTP server via ShadowSocks.

One way to bypass the block..

As tunnels are encrypted, the ISP does not have access to the content in the tunnel (so they can't see what type of traffic it is). So no, they can not block content inside the tunnel, but they CAN block the tunnel in it's entirety, at which time you just move to a different VPN server (most VPN providers has multiple servers across the world).

Net neutrality in its moer

Indeed. Going to get interesting when we launch services locally in South Africa (it's on the radar) with things like this going on. At this stage the block is only on SAIX's international breakout, so technically, if we are to launch inside ZA we would still be able to provide full service. Wonder what SAIX will do then... Start firewalling their peering ports too? :D

I cannot connect to tweaknews. I can only download my stuff using SAIX NNTP server but its retention period sucks

Were you surprised when the call centre agent didn't know what you were asking about when you asked if they are blocking NNTP?

Because you shouldn't be - they are call centre agents not network engineers.

That said - have you tried connecting to a news provider on a non-standard port?

Yip Tried SSL and normal ports no luck

NGN operates within South Africa. I think this block is to external NNTP services. i.e. Tweaknews.

Savage said something about this above.

I was unable to connect to NGN since the weekend. Also some other sites that the guys were complaining about. But now they seem OK again.

Just tested as well , seems to be back but that to little to late just moved over to crystalweb, rather spend the money with people that understand the concept of a Capped line and let me do what I want with my data.

Interesting...

Wonder if they made a u-turn on their decision to block due to the massive outcry of the users. Anyways, glad to hear it's all working again.

No problem with NNTP this side using news.saix.net. Is the issue to other NNTP hosts?

I dont know, but it made my decision to move to Crysalweb so much easier.
