Why you will be banned from WhatsApp

Wait a minute, how do they know what message you are sending? Didn't they say with the encryption update that even they cant decipher your messages....

Yes, but they can probably still see volumes and frequency of messages sent. X amount within X time, could construe spam.

From the article it looks like they're not looking at the contents of your messages:

Actions which can lead to a temporary ban include:

Sending too many messages to users who do not have your number saved in their address books.
Being blocked by too many people in a short period of time.
Creating too many groups that contain users who do not list you in their address books.
Sending the same message to too many people.
Violating the Terms of Service.
Users may also have their phone numbers permanently banned from WhatsApp if they violate the app’s terms of service.

I don't know [-]much[/-] anything about encryption but wouldn't an encrypted message sent to a large number of people still look the same even if you cannot read the contents?

If it was encrypted end-to-end, each message would be encrypted with a different key that only the recipient should be able to decrypt, and each message would appear different.

but hey ho they ARE looking at the numbers you send to, your address book, the address book of the people you message and ... how can they tell if you are sending the same message to multiple recipients if they aren't looking at the message itself?

So yeah NOT too happy about the invasion of privacy!!!
