Asus N17U Router Review

Okay, so I managed to pick up this router which is the Asus N17U. My intention wasn’t to get another router, but having an extra router can become quite handy.

If I’m honest, my internet experience over the last year or so hasn’t been stellar, loads of issues, and loads of routers already down.
I’m in the cellular side of things, and have dealt with a few Asus phones like the Zen phone and the Zen Smart Watch, so I’m happy to deal with Asus in other type of products as well. I'm also not really somebody who fiddles much with routers, and will set it up, and that’s it.

Ill do a quick review below on the N17U, but it’s just the basics of my initial thoughts on my experience.

Packaging

Right, starting off with Packaging. The Asus N17U came in what one would consider standard packaging, with the dimensions of the box being around Width 30cm by length 23cm and Depth 8cm .

Inside the box we have the following :

Asus N17U Router
RJ-45 Cable
RJ-11 Cable
Support CD
Power Adapter
Warranty Card
Quick Start Guide
Splitter

Below are some images of the packaging, and what is inside of the box

Build Quality

The N17U’s build quality is good, and feels quite solid when holding it. The look of the router is somewhat stylish similar to the N14U. The router does not lay flat, instead its in an upright position, and personally I quite like that. This router with its looks, would sit well in any sort of layout within your home

1x RJ11 for xDSL

It also has 2 x 2.0 USB ports for a USB Dongle for 3G/4G Fail over, FTP Server, Printer server etc
Power button
Reset button
WPS Button
Wireless on/Off
Power Adapter socket

Setup

I'm pretty comfortable setting up routers by now. Having been through many already, this was no different to me. Setup was straight forward, and the Asus User Interface was somewhat refreshing as compared to the other routers in terms of their dashboard. Will get to the actual setup later on, but as with most routers, you really just stick to username and password provided by your ISP. You can do the normal ie changing the SSID for your WIFI, and so forth. I haven't touched anything else in terms of the 3G/4G failover etc will hopefully get to that if i decide to go into that.

Performance

As somebody with a pretty unstable line, I was skeptical about whether this router would make much of a difference. Let’s be clear here, this router didn’t fix my line issues, but what it did do for me was improve my wifi performance through the house. I wasn’t particularly sure on a router with built in antennas, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a much better wifi signal. The router has 2 x 2dbi internal antennas
Overall when I had zero line issues, the performance of the router was slick and stable, and things looked better at least from what I have become use to.

The Good

Pricing
Stylish good looks
Performance
Good Wifi Range
Terrific User Interface

The above is based on very limited testing, so I will review the Good later on again, and might change things here and there

The Bad

As with most devices, there are good things and there are bad things. I struggled to find anything bad about the device. Because of only testing for a short time, I’ll come back to the bad once things have settled, and I have spent enough time to find anything negative

Ratings

Packaging 7/10
Build Quality 9/10
Ports: 8/10
Setup: 9/10
Performance: 8/10
Pricing: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

Conclusion

Stylish good looks, good build quality, and good pricing for this entry/mid-level router from Asus, makes the N17U a really good buy, for those looking for something with strong performance on a budget. Sure you could find a better performing router with many more features, but at the price the N17U goes for, it’s pretty much value for money.

For the sake of transparency did you buy this at the full retail price or did ASUS hook you up?

Paid for it, but at a slight discount with Asus, so didnt receive a test unit for review purposes if that is what you want to know :) Wouldnt have minded that, but hey ho, a small discount is just as good i suppose

I didnt expect them to come forward with the offer, but i thought lets give this a go. I was initially hesitant in purchasing it, and actually declined the offer, but then went back and took it up ... Normal retail pricing is around R1600 to R1900 depending on where you purchase it

In this short few hours of testing, im glad i had this chat with the Asus Rep on MyBB. My general speed on the speed test has improved from 10mbps to around 17mbps, and surprisingly the wifi is alot stronger it seems, despite the fact it has internal antennaes.

As said above, it hasnt improved my line issues, that has flared up again with disconnects, but overall experience seems positive for this mid ranger router.

You might just want to go through and fix some of the spelling errors and I don't know why ASUS would say RJ45 10/100/Gigabits BaseT for LAN, instead of the normal way of saying 10/100/1000.

Also the the antenna are 2dBi if you want to amend that part.

It also isn't a bad idea to get some screenshots of the modern web UI.

sure thanks for the heads up :) Its kind of a rushed review, and i know there are a few spelling errors (Kind of fixed it) some where. I've never done a review on a router before, mostly cellphones, but will go through it again.

Sure, i'm in and out at home today, so will get a screen shot of the actual UI of the modem.

Just for interest sake on the RJ45 10/100 part, i also see that here, and i went and cross referenced with that just to make sure i get that right. Maybe the Asus Rep can explain that further, as to why that is the case.

Hi there,

Thank you for the heads up. You are correct, the LAN specs should have been 10/100/1000 to avoid confusion. I will take this up with our web design team and ask them to fix it on our website.

Thank you.

Apparently these don't support secure wifi bridging if you want to use them as WiFi extender, will only do wep not wpa encryption?

Well the cheaper Asus router that the op recommened had that shortcoming and seems to be par for the course in this range?

I dont intend to use it as an extender, but will have a look later for you on that bit, or see if i can find out something. I would assume, that if you use this as the main router, then use a 2nd router that has WPA encryption that it could work? but then im just guessing right now, as im not too clued up on Bridging

Hi there,

DSL-N17U supports the following wifi security algorithms:

64-bit WEP, 128-bit WEP, WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK, WPA-Enterprise , WPS support

But does it support all those in bridge mode, as in this router used as a WiFi extender?
Which is what I asked originally.

Hi airborne,

DSL-N17U is an ADSL/ VDSL router. It was not designed to be used as a wifi range extender/ bridge.

We have range extenders, as well as router/ AP/ range extender 3-in-1s available. Would you like more information on these?

Thank you.

Here is the pic of the UI.. Its very clean UI imo

Unfortunately not. Only our mid-range and high-end duo-band routers have the ASUS Router App support, to do hardware requirements.

Thanks.

I might be in the market for a wireless router only, what models do you have Ito pricing and comparisons. I currently have a billion 8000nlx as my VDSL router.

Good day.

May we know what your budget is?

Also, do you need the below features?
- Gigabit WAN/ LAN
- USB port for 3G failover/ media streaming
- Advanced security
- ASUS Router App support

Thanks.
