Hi
This could come as a shock but the Renault Scenic’s, new & old all they have the same steering lock and that is the weakest point in the Scenic as the chain is a strong as the weakest link! For sure thy are the lucky ones that can afford to take the Scenic to a Renault dealer where the computer check the state of the steering lock as is fully electronic, I’m here for the other people like me that we buy a nice car very cheap and we did not care about how reliable was and we could not afford to take the Scenic to a Renault dealer so we have to end up at an independent French car mechanic, mine have 30 different Renault cars waiting for spare parts from France so I’m not alone in that criteria. I’m here to alert all the owners of Scenic’s all over the world! Be very care full when going on a trip in the middle of nowhere any time you stop the car will be the last one. And don't expect to have cell signal all over the country. You will be doom with short amount of water and food, no cell signal and hostile people around your car, while your family scream at you why did you chose this French car? This is a worst case scenario that you must be always prepare if you going for a long trip with the Scenic or sold it and get another MPV everyone copy the Scenic Design, BMW 2 series, Mercedes, Opel Zafira, Nissan livina, VW got 2 models, Honda have 2, Cryisler got 2 models.... so the selection is huge.

Be care full when stopping the Scenic, your front wheels should be free from obstructions if not as soon you stop the car the auto handbrake will engage blocking the wheels like in a wise grip, then you try to start the car the steering lock will brake and you will be stuck no matter you can move the steering wheel , the steering lock won’t let the car to start and to replace it will cost you ZAR 9000 + Labour.

Let me tell you what happen to me: I’m coming on the N3 south at 120km/h without knowing a puncture is busy deflating my back tyre, in a moment I hear so much noise on the side of the Scenic sound like the manifold exhaust got loose, then I make an emergency stop, end up with the left tyre pushing against the wall of the drain of the highway; Without thinking twice I switch off the motor and you know in the Scenic as soon you stop the motor the hand brake comes on so I left the scenic with the front when pushing against the side wall and the hand break holding the wheel under pressure almost like a vase grip, no strange later the steering lock got damage, then jump to see what happen, the back tyre on the left got destroy, I was running on the rims, I did not overturn that Scenic because god is everywhere; Change the tyre in 15min, then was time to go, put the card inside press start and for my surprise I hear some click noise inside the dashboard and then the message “Steering Locked “ I move the steering without problem but I keep on getting that message, the car is perfect the steering is not locked, all the electronic works but because of the bloody link in between the steering lock and the CPU of the scenic it made believe to the CPU that the wheels are locked and the CPU don’t allowed the motor to start. I wait 3hours in the border of one of the busiest highways in South Africa waiting for the AA in middle afternoon approaching peak hour. There are so many brilliant people in Renault how no one think that how much more dangerous is for the occupants of any car with that stupid "steering lock"? be stranded in the middle of nowhere in South Africa , not Europe, than let the driver flip a switch that will override the link in between the CPU and the steering lock allowing the family to reach their destination?;
Imagine if it was my wife driving to a shopping in the other side of town with my baby off 4 months and my Boy of 4 years, halfway there she stops the Scenic for my biggest son to wee without noticing she stops the motor without noticing the left the tyre is pushing against the paving then she try to start and get the message ‘Steering Locked’ and the Scenic won’t start, both children start crying and the place she stop have no street lights and in a dangerous place like SOWETO where criminals could take advantage of white stranded women, many times happen before women alone on the road became molest it and rape and their children kid nap and only return after pay a huge ransom.
Please stay away from any Scenic if you can till Renault recall all Scenic’s to install the override switch for the steering lock!!

I'm sure Renault France knew this could happen one day but there is not warning in the manual about it, they are more guilty if a family is assault it for been stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time than Toyota making a few cars that the accelerator get stuck killing the occupants, it happen a few times.

If one day you got time, go to my blog where I'm compiling all the information about
Renault dangerous Steering Lock :

God is everywhere but he didn't stop you buying a Renault.... he must hate you

Well, with posts like this to start off January with, the year promises to be full of humour.

That English looks as if it's been written in another language and auto translated :)

God works in mysterious ways ffs... you know this!

And of course the issue has nothing to do with a shyte driver who destroys a tire by driving on a flat for so long etc etc etc... the car is rubbish not the driver

God made him/her/it do it

Hope he's got a good lawyer. If Renault see that garbage he'll need one.

Tks for the links KoisanX, very entertaining:D

OP should look on the bright side - at least he didn't buy a Ford Kuga and burn himself to a crisp.

Very Sorry for the long long story but I could not just write half of the story;

Renault is going to deal with the commission for safety on the road in Europe, they are very strict with car parts that could fail, you always catch with the lies like the VW emissions or the economy in some Toyotas, Renault knew the Steering locks can fail any time and did not warn anyone or put any warning in the Manual, I would like to know what Interpol will think about it.

The only thing that need to understand that the Scenic an affordable family car could let you strand it anywhere, anytime.

He means the Kugas tent to catch fire or that are week and break easy making them as a lemon like the Scenic;

For sure as soon the steering lock come from France and the Scenic fix it will be Sold very quickly, I done everything in that car 1.9Dci, Motor and turbo are new (done less than 5000km) that motor and turbo will do 100000km without any problem, manifold new, steering lock new, vacuum pump new, cam shaft new, Led running lights new I'm going to ask just for how much cost me to bring the Scenic like new: R 80000 neg.
At least with my Scenic you know Motor & Turbo have less than 5000km, in all the others Scenics the real km are a mystery as in 2010 Renault recall all dashboards and reset the kms .

100k km for a new engine isn't very much.
