F/lift of the full 4-Series range.

Since its debut in 2013, BMW has delivered nearly 400,000 units of the 4-Series to customers all over the world. The biggest single market, racking up approximately a third of all BMW 4-Series sales, is the USA, followed by Great Britain and Germany. About half of all BMW 4-Series models are sold in Europe. The Gran Coupe accounts for some 50 per cent of global BMW 4-Series sales, while the Coupe and Convertible make up around 25 per cent each.

Exterior and lighting design

Styling cues borrowed from the spectacular BMW Concept 4-Series Coupe from 2012 are clearly visible in the design of the new BMW 4-Series, with the new models including elements such as hexagonally shaped full-LED headlights, a large air intake with eye-catching bars and full-LED rear lights.

The restyled nose of the BMW 4-Series expresses the model range's dynamic overall personality to great effect. Crisp contours alternate with expansive surfaces to create a broad, sharply-contoured front end of three-dimensional muscularity that hugs the road in sporting fashion. The defining feature at the front of the new BMW 4-Series is an unbroken central air intake whose aperture increases in size towards the outer edges, lending the entire nose section a more imposing presence and a greater sense of width. On the Sport Line and Luxury Line versions, virtually the entire air intake is bordered by an eye-catching bar that accentuates the vehicle's wide, powerful stance. The bar has a high-gloss black finish on Sport Line cars, while the Luxury Line prefers elegant chrome.

Stunning LED light arrangement with a sharper gaze

Twin headlights help ensure the front end of the BMW 4-Series models sticks to the traditional BMW template. The BMW 4-Series Coupe, BMW 4-Series Convertible and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe are now equipped with new bi-LED headlights as standard. The headlights are composed of a familiar silhouette: flat-bottomed headlight tubes encircled by daytime running light rings and a dynamic cropped look produced by the characteristic "eyebrow" design. The tubes' dark-coloured holders give the interior of the headlight assemblies a clear, cool look with winsome technical appeal. LED front foglamps also form part of standard specification.

All models in the new BMW 4-Series are now optionally available with a standout feature in the form of adaptive full-LED headlights, whose highly expressive light arrangement intensifies the front end's dynamic and technically advanced appearance. The familiar layout with twin circular headlights has been incorporated into a hexagonal setting that creates an even greater sense of precision and sophistication than standard trim. The headlights have been deliberately designed to make the space-saving technology in the headlight tubes clearly visible. The headlight units are cropped off slightly at the top by the LED indicators that form the headlights' "eyebrows". This has the effect of making the light arrangement seem wider still, which in turn gives the new BMW 4-Series models an even more powerful stance on the road.

BMW reveals mild facelift for full 4 Series family

BMW has revealed a subtle facelift for its 4 Series range, comprising updated styling and revised suspension.

The mid-cycle update applies to the coupé, convertible and gran coupé. The engine line-up – which was tweaked back in May 2016 – remains unchanged.

Look closely, and you may notice the restyled LED headlights, which replace the xenon units on the outgoing range. In addition, all models will now be equipped with LED front foglamps as standard. Other styling changes include modified air intakes, fresh LED rear lights and a new rear apron.

Inside, highlights include new trim detailing and a centre console finished in high-gloss black. The instrument panel gains double stitching, while three new upholstery colours have been added to the palette.

BMW 4 Series facelift There are also two new exterior paint finishes (Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange), which are both exclusive to the new BMW 4 Series family. In addition, fresh wheel designs have been added.

BMW says the updated coupé and gran coupé now offer a stiffer suspension set-up, claiming that the new configuration delivers “even sportier handling without any loss of ride comfort”.

The update, of course, also applies to the BMW M4 Coupé and M4 Convertible.

2017 BMW 4 Series facelift revealed

Updates for the BMW 4 Series bring subtle styling changes and new engines; first deliveries expected in April, prices starting at £32,525

The facelifted BMW 4 Series has been revealed, featuring design and engine updates, ahead of a public debut at the upcoming Geneva motor show.

The facelifted first-generation 4 Series is set for UK deliveries in April, with prices starting at £32,525 - £680 more than the old model. It means the updated BMW's starting price is higher than those of its closest rivals, with the Audi A5 starting at £30,700 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class range opening at £28,295.

The new 4 Series line-up, which encompasses the two-door coupé and Convertible, which starts from £37,315, and the four-door Gran Coupé, also priced from £32,525, receives a mildly altered front end, with lightly restyled air ducts in the lower bumper featuring on both the standard Luxury and higher-spec M-Sport variants.

Further changes have been made to the headlights, which retain the same shape as before but receive a new internal graphic similar to that seen on the 2012 Concept 4 Series, with LEDs for both low and high beam together with an optional adaptive LED function.

At the rear, the model also adopts styling tweaks to the lights and bumper, mimicking the changes to the front end.

The new BMW also receives revised 18in and 19in alloy wheels and two new exterior colours: Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange.

The changes inside are every bit as subtle as those made to the exterior. Included are a newly designed steering wheel and electroplated aluminium and chrome trim elements as well as high-gloss black panels and the choice of a number of different dashboard trim finishes, all mirroring the chances already brought to the 3 Series in 2016.

BMW has also updated the navigation system for the 4 Series, with the top-of-the-line Professional unit receiving a new interface with six tile-like icons, as seen on the latest 5 Series.

Having already received updated petrol and diesel engines as part of a running change last year, the 4 Series continues into the latter half of its planned seven-year model cycle without any significant drivetrain revisions.

Included in the new line-up is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit delivering 181bhp in the 420i and 248bhp in the 430i. It is accompanied by a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which produces 321bhp in the 440i.

There is also a choice of three diesel engines: a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder offering 187bhp in the 420d and 221bhp in the 425d, as well as a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder with 254bhp in the 430d and 309bhp in the four-wheel-drive 435d xDrive.

The 4-Series Gran Coupé can also be ordered with the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 148bhp in the 418d.

The most economical of the line-up is the 420d, which returns a claimed 70.6mpg combined, with average CO2 emissions of 106g/km.

Depending on the engine, the 4 Series can be specified with the choice of either a six-speed manual or eight-speed torque converter-equipped automatic gearbox. Selected models can also be ordered with xDrive four-wheel drive in place of standard rear-wheel drive.

Heading the new 4cSeries line-up is a reworked M4, which is sold in both coupé and Convertible bodystyles. Mirroring the changes brought to standard 4 Series models, it receives freshened LED headlights and tail-lights together with a number of subtle interior upgrades.

Power for the M4 coupé and Convertible continues to hail from BMW M division’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, developing 425bhp in standard guise and 444bhp in combination with an optional Competition Package.

Prices for the M4 coupé start at £57,817, rising to £61,910 for the M4 Convertible. The Competition Pack versions of those models are priced from £60,815 and £64,110 respectively.

Since its introduction to the BMW line-up in 2013, the three-model-strong 4 Series has garnered more than 400,000 sales worldwide as a successor to the earlier 3-Series Coupe and Convertible.

Facelifted BMW 4 Series Details Revealed

The BMW 4 Series Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe and M4 Coupe and Convertible have received minor exterior, interior and technological updates. Take a look at what’s changed…

Details regarding the facelifted BMW 4 Series have been revealed and the model now benefits from a range of visual and technical improvements. BMW South Africa has confirmed that the updated 4 Series will arrive in South Africa in May 2017. Take a look at what's changed...

Exterior changes

The facelifted 4 Series borrows styling cues from the 2012 BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe seen in the hexagonal full-LED headlights, large air intake with bars and the full rear LED taillights. The front-end is defined with an unbroken central air intake that widens at the edges providing a sense of width and presence. The air intake, depending on the derivative, is finished off with a bar in either high-gloss black (Sport Line) or chrome (Luxury Line).

The refreshed 4 Series features twin bi-LED headlights and LED fog lamps as standard while full-LED adaptive headlights with LED indicators are offered as an option. A redesigned rear apron and newly designed elongated L-shaped LED taillights are seen with the indicators taking up a larger area towards the inner section of the light housing.

To round off the look of the 4 Series, BMW will offer a wider range of 18 and 19-inch light alloy wheels with 4 new designs to choose from. In addition to this, new exterior paint finishes will also be offered such as Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange. The new wheel designs and exterior paint finishes will be exclusively available on the facelifted 4 Series.

Interior changes

On the inside, you will notice a number of changes. The standard sports steering wheel features a new rim finished in leather offering better grip and the door control panels and air vent surrounds feature electroplated inserts. The roof operating switch and integral belt guides in 4 Series Convertible now also have an electroplated finish. Chrome details are seen on the air conditioning and audio controls while the centre console features a high-gloss cover panel. Double stitching is now found on the instrument panel.

Customers can also choose between 3 new upholstery colours including Midnight Blue Dakota leather, Cognac Dakota leather and Ivory White Dakota leather with contrast stitching and piping. New interior trim strips will also be offered and these include Carbon Aluminium, Light Fineline and high-gloss Black with Pearl Chrome

BMW’s optional Navigation Professional information system features a new interface with 6 tile icons that can be shuffled across two screen pages according to preference. A Multifunctional Instrument Display will also be offered as an option, giving the driver different display options according to the current driving mode. When in Sport mode, for example, performance-related information is displayed such as speed, engine revs and current output. Relevant displays are shown for Comfort and Eco Pro modes too.

An inductive charging tray, found in the centre armrest, is also available for compatible smartphones, eliminating the need for charging cables. Furthermore, the optional ConnectedDrive navigation package includes a WiFi hotspot that can provide Internet connectivity for up to 10 devices and 2 USB ports are found in the centre console should you need them. Apple CarPlay is offered as an option and the BMW Connected mobility assistant app can be used in conjunction with ConnectedDrive Services.

Engine choice

The facelifted 4 Series will use the same engines as before. A four-cylinder, 2.0-litre twin turbopetrol with 135 kW and 290 Nm will power the 420i while the 430i will offer 185 kW and 350 Nm of torque. The range-topping 440i offers 240 kW and 450 Nm of torque. The diesel-powered 420d with its 2.0-litre twin turbodiesel engine offers 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission will be offered across all body styles.

The suspension of the 4 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe has been enhanced and is now stiffer with advanced damping technology and an upgraded steering setup. The changes, according to BMW, improve the handling ability of the 4 Series. As for the 4 Series Convertible, the suspension settings remain unchanged.
