I have been looking for a way for some time now to automate the image saving sequence in Firefox, for um... research purposes! ;)

Requirements: Firefox and the Flashgot extension (add-on)

Before we start, add the FlashGot Firefox Extension to Firefox if you don't already have it...

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/220

Now, you might use Stumbleupon or Google to find a nice picture, or you just happen to come across it on the Internet... and then you realize, hey it would be great if I could just grab the entire sequence of images all to my hard disk!

Take this one for example (Perfectly safe picture!! - what did you think I was talking about?? :D)

http://www.hagencartoons.com/cartoon75.gif

Now obviously that cartoon belongs to a series of cartoons numbering from 1 to 75 (or higher).

The first things you want to do is explore the range of images in your browser, will only take one or two clicks and edits.

Check to see if the range begins with 1, 01, or 001!

To do this simply click in the address bar where the URL is... and change the location of the image to something like the following

http://www.hagencartoons.com/cartoon1.gif

and then press enter! In this case, it will show you the first image in the sequence. But sometimes, the sequence will start with 01, so pressing 1 will give you a "Not Found" error. No problem, just click back on your browser and change the location of the first pic to ...

http://www.hagencartoons.com/cartoon01.gif

In this case, that will give you and error message because there is no such filename (The Filename of the picture is cartoon1.gif not cartoon01.gif )

For some reason there is no set standard for naming sequences of image files on the Internet, and some people insist on using simple numbers to sequence their files - Morons! It would make things a lot simpler if people named their files "PicItoo****heBeachLastSummer01of40.jpg" But I digress...

Anyway, once you know what the address is of the first image in the sequence, you can then right click on the image in Firefox and choose
"Copy Image Location" (this is going to copy the URL to the clipboard)

Then Right click again and choose Build Gallery (that menu option is added by the FlashGot Extension).

A Build Gallery Dialog Box will open. This works on wild cards, and it will offer you some options of what it thinks the wild cards should be. I usually just ignore this and paste the URL that I just copied to the clipboard back into the first field of the Dialog box. Now edit the URL to insert your wild card field. It will look something like this...

Do you see that [1-99] in the filename? This is going to tell the FlashGot extension to build me a gallery of all the cartoons from number one to number 99 (I just picked 99 as an arbitrary number - don't worry if there are only 80 images, the not found ones will just not load). If there are more than 99 images... I can go back and build another gallery with a higher number!

Then press enter. A new tab will open and all your images will start loading. You can look at them while they are loading.

If they do not download, then you either typed something wrong, or there is in fact no image sequence.

Once you have the entire page of images loaded, you either save them all individually by right-clicking on the image and choosing save file as or do what I do, just right click on the image and choose "Save Page As" and choose the complete option! This is going to create a folder on your hard drive with all the images inside. When it has saved you can go in there and rename or move the images (I use ACDSee or FastStone) to do that. Once you have moved them, you can delete the folder you just saved.

I think this is a faster method than setting up an entire website download using HTTrack or some other spidering software. This way you just grab the images you want!

You can take this one step further.... Sometimes you will notice that the location of the picture has another number in it... like this fictional one...

You can also use the same method to grab all the photos in all the Galleries! (or you can do them one at a time).

That's it... :D now here's a pic of a pretty lady for you to experiment on... Warning!!! NSFW!!! (This pic is ok... but others in the sequence contain nudity!)

errr... I just use flashget itself and the wild card download function ;)

I found that most of the time, the default offered fails to actually get the files I want. Hence, the little manual edit there. It's just one cut and paste more, but gives me more control.

Also, you can use Flashget's "Download All with Flashget" to download all things on a page (you can exclude), in IE-type browsers, at least.

In Maxthon, you can Ctrl-click an image to save it instantly to a folder within the Maxthon directory. Very handy for lots of images.
