Updated Yaris yo...

The introduction of the new, significantly revised Toyota Yaris range is set to add to further impetus to the success of Toyota's small hatchback. In fact, the car has continued to increase its share of the B-segment (supermini) market in Western Europe since the launch of the third generation of the model in 2011, rising to more than 6.5 per cent and 208,000-plus sales in 2016.

This performance provides a strong platform on which to strengthen the Yaris' established qualities and broaden its appeal to new and increasingly discerning customers in a highly competitive marketplace. Design, quality, performance and safety are key purchase considerations and have been the focus areas for Toyota's programme of improvements.

Hybrid power remains a unique selling point for the model, a powertrain option that is currently leveraging more than 40 per cent of all Yaris' European sales.

The Toyota Yaris has a strong European heritage, having been manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France's Valenciennes factory since 2001. Production passed three million units in 2016, with cars not only supplied throughout Europe, but also sent for export around the world, including Africa, North America and Middle East markets in Asia.

TOYOTA OFFICIALLY REVEALS ‘SIGNIFICANTLY REVISED’ YARIS

Toyota has officially revealed the facelifted version of its third-generation Yaris, describing the range as “significantly revised”.

The Japanese automaker claims that it spent some €90-million developing the updated Yaris, introducing “more than 900 new parts” in the process.

The biggest news is that a new 1,5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine has been added to the range, essentially replacing the 1,3-litre mill. Although Toyota South Africa Motors won’t be drawn on whether this new 82 kW/136 N.m engine will be part of the local line-up when the facelifted Yaris arrives in SA towards the middle of 2017, it seems likely.

The local arm of the Japanese brand, however, has already confirmed that the Yaris hot hatch will not be offered locally.

Toyota claims that the new 1,5-litre unit delivers 10% more power and torque than the previous 1,3-litre engine, yet also posts an improvement in fuel economy of up to 12%. Compared to the outgoing unit, it is 0,8 seconds quicker from 0-100 km/h (11,0 versus 11,8).

Styling changes on the refreshed model include new headlamps, a new grille, fresh lower door mouldings, a redesigned tailgate, new rear light clusters, an updated rear bumper, new exterior colours and different wheel options.

Inside, the cabin gains fresh upholstery and a new 4,2-inch colour TFT multi-information display. Other detail changes include new “propeller-style” air vents, cool blue instrument illumination and what Toyota calls a “more streamlined execution of the multimedia screen and controls in the centre console”.

Bolder look, new engine for Toyota's Yaris

Toyota has given its current-generation Yaris yet another makeover and as far as facelifts go this is quite a comprehensive one, with Toyota claiming to have replaced more than 900 parts.

Although the familiar shape remains, Toyota’s ED2 design studio in France has reimagined both the front and rear ends, with the Yaris gaining a new catamaran-inspired trapezoidal grille upfront, along with a redesigned grille and headlights, while LED daytime running lights feature on some models.

The back end sees a completely new horizontal taillight design that extends into the tailgate, which has also been reshaped in accordance, along with the bumper. Two new colours join the range in the form of Hydro Blue and Tokyo Red and fresh wheel designs round off the external changes.

Although the basic interior design remains as before, many detailed alterations have taken place. There’s a totally new twin-dial instrument cluster for instance, as well as propeller-inspired air vents, a neater-looking touch-screen and ‘cool blue’ instrument illumination. Customers can also look forward to a fresh assortment of cabin colours, trims and upholsteries.

In an early sign of how manufacturers are going to adapt to upcoming real-world economy and emissions standards in Europe, Toyota has created a brand new, and upsized, petrol engine for its Yaris, the previous 1.33-litre unit making way for a 1.5-litre, which remains normally aspirated. The motor has a rather high compression ratio of 13.5:1 and is capable of running on the Atkinson cycle. In fact Toyota claims it’s up to 12 percent more efficient than the previous 1.33, and it’s more powerful, with 82kW and 136Nm on tap (up from 73kW/125Nm).

The 51kW 1-litre petrol carries over as a budget option, while the ultra-efficient 1.5-litre hybrid continues further up the range. The latter model is now more refined thanks to numerous additional noise-deadening measures. Toyota’s compact hatch goes big on safety too, with a raft of ‘Safety Sense’ active systems such as autonomous braking, auto high beam and lane departure alert fitted across the range in Europe.

Exact South African specifications have yet to be confirmed, but we we’ll know soon enough, given that Toyota plans to launch the new Yaris locally during the second quarter of this year. Sadly, the ultra-hot 157kW turbo-charged Gazoo Yaris that was revealed last month is not destined for our shores.

The Toyota guys have been spending too much time admiring the Lexus grill it seems, that "significantly revised" Yaris is horrible.

They do, hence my statement, I feel they are trying too hard to let some Lexus filter onto their Toyota, I just think it' s not working too well.
Fair enough. I don't like the front look either.

Analog clock is the best feature of the car!

Actually looks pretty decent, pity I will never be able to afford it. Current yaris starts at 191k, so the new one will be 200k+ starting price!

New Toyota Yaris on sale now priced from £12,495

The refreshed Toyota Yaris gets a fresh design, a new engine and tweaked trim levels; UK order books are open now

The new Toyota Yaris was revealed with a facelifted design, new engine and upgraded tech last month. This month it's gone on sale in Britain.

Priced from £12,495, the Ford Fiesta rival starts in 1.0-litre Active spec with standard fit features such as a collision and lane departure warning system, automatic high beam and rain sensing wipers, as well as a Bluetooth six-speaker audio system.

Above this are five more trim levels - Icon, Icon Tech, Design, Bi-Tone and Excel - and a choice of two more drivetrains, a 1.5-litre petrol and a hybrid, which mates an electric motor to that unit.

Kit as you work up the range includes 15in alloy wheels (top models get 16in wheels), automatic air conditioning, projector headlamps, a 4.2in touchscreen infotainment system, satnav, reverse camera and parking sensors.

The new Yaris's naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine replaces the old car's 1.33-litre and produces 110bhp and 100lb ft of torque with a 0-62mph time of 11.0sec. The hybrid engine is offered with CO2 emissions of as low as 75g/km.

The hybrid Yaris accounted for 40% of European sales for the pre-facelift car. The new model gets new engine mounts, roll restrictor, front driveshafts and subframe which Toyota says will help to reduce noise and vibration. It also claims that adjustments in the suspension and steering have been made to improve the hybrid’s ride and steering accuracy.

The refreshed exterior design gives the Yaris a sportier look, with a new front bumper and headlights as well as a reworked rear with new tail-lights.

Above the regular Yaris range is a new Yaris hot hatch called the Yaris GRMN. It has a 205bhp supercharged engine.

Pricing! Updated Toyota Yaris (with new mill) for SA

When the facelifted version of the third-generation Toyota Yaris was revealed back in February, the Japanese automaker’s local arm wouldn’t be drawn on whether the new 1,5-litre engine would make it to our shores. But now we can confirm that it will indeed be offered in South Africa.

The refreshed local line-up – which is expected to launch towards the end of May – will comprise five derivatives (one more than the outgoing range), with a 1,0-litre three-pot again serving as the entry-level model and a hybrid version again taking it place at the very summit of the range. But perhaps more interesting is the fact that the old 73 kW/125 N.m 1,3-litre naturally aspirated engine will make way for a new 1,5-litre unit.

This fresh 1496 cm³ four-cylinder petrol engine is worth 82 kW at 6 000 r/min and 136 N.m at 4 400 r/min, and can be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission. Equipped with the former, it takes a claimed 11,0 seconds to hit 100 km/h from standstill, while the CVT model adds two-tenths of a second.

Claimed combined fuel economy is 5,0 L/100 km for the manual and 4,8 L/100 km for the CVT, with both coming in comfortably below South Africa’s taxable CO2 threshold (120 g/km). All models come standard with a three-year or 45 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km) as well as a three-year or 100 000 km warranty.

So, what about that hot hatch you’ve been seeing in the news over the past few months? Well, back in January, Toyota South Africa Motors told CARmag.co.za that the planned performance version of the Yaris was sadly “not on the cards” for SA.

Pricing:
Toyota Yaris 1,0 Pulse: R199 000
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Pulse: R228 700
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Pulse CVT: R241 400
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Pulse Plus CVT: R249 600
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Hybrid: R307 200

Don't those wheels look a bit small on such a tall car?
