Updated Cash cow.

Nissan has unveiled the new Nissan Qashqai crossover, with significant enhancement of the car's premium character. The upgrades focus on a contemporary new exterior design, higher levels of interior quality and improved driving performance.

New Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies have also been added, continuing Nissan's ongoing journey towards zero emissions and zero fatalities. The new Qashqai will be available with ProPILOT autonomous driving capability during FY17, controlling the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways. This will provide consumers with a more confident drive, enhanced control and greater freedom during heavy traffic congestion and high-speed cruising.

Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, commented: "We have put the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision at the heart of our product strategy, guiding the development of every vehicle. The new Nissan Qashqai is proof of that, with enhancements which will continue to define and set new standards in the crossover segment."

It's like they started updating the design from the front and then gave up before the A-pillars. Rest of the car looks a lot like it used to.

Some good looking SUVs coming out of the Japanese lately with the CX, CH-R and now this...

Good improvement and Nissan seems to be on the Go except for the Go.

Updated Nissan Qashqai crossover shows its face

Nissan has used the Geneva Motor Show to unveil the facelifted Qashqai crossover, which boasts a new exterior design and what the automaker describes as “higher levels of interior quality” and “improved driving performance”.

Interestingly, the new Qashqai will be available in some markets with what Nissan calls “autonomous drive capability” (controlling the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways).

The automaker claims that the updated Qashqai features an “enhanced premium appeal” in the cabin, where it says it has improved the layout, added higher-quality materials and implemented “advanced technology”.

Also new is a D-shaped multi-function steering wheel with satin-chrome inserts. It features a new four-way controller for the combi-meter display, for more intuitive use and less “eyes off the road” time.

Exterior styling changes include a revised front end, which features the latest Nissan “V-motion” grille. The headlamps have also been redesigned and now feature a new version of the boomerang-style daytime running light signature. Adaptive front lighting has furthermore been added.

Round back, the taillight motif has been extended across the whole lamp, and now includes a 3D lens effect to enhance the signature shape.

Under the skin, Nissan says it has modified the suspension, damping and steering systems, which results in an “even more refined on-the-road experience”. The brand also claims that improved use of absorption materials and increased rear glass thickness have led to a reduction in cabin noise.

Nissan Qashqai Updated

The facelifted Nissan Qashqai has been shown at the Geneva Motor Show with updated styling and new technology features.

Nissan’s popular Qashqai crossover has been facelifted and the updated model features a number of styling, technology and performance improvements.

The facelifted Qashqai will offer ProPILOT autonomous driving capability, allowing the car to drive itself in stop and go traffic and on the highway. The level of autonomy is expected to be quite straightforward so features such as automatic lane changing won’t be offered just yet.

Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, commented: “We have put the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision at the heart of our product strategy, guiding the development of every vehicle. The new Nissan Qashqai is proof of that, with enhancements which will continue to define and set new standards in the crossover segment.”

Key features

The Qashqai features revised styling with Nissan's new 'V-motion' grille while the 'boomerang' rear light themes now run across the entire lamp housing with a 3D lens effect. Customers can choose from 2 new exterior colours including Vivid Blue and Chestnut Bronze. The Qashqai rides on newly designed 17-, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interior has been improved with upgraded materials and a new cabin layout. The top-spec Qashqai Tekna+ derivative features new seats in Nappa leather with 3D quilting on the centre panels. A new D-shaped multifunction steering wheel is fitted with a 4-way controller and satin-chrome inserts.

The NissanConnect infotainment system has also been updated with a new user interface. A 7-speaker BOSE premium sound system will be offered as an option.

Nissan says the Qashqai is now more refined thanks to changes to the suspension, damping and steering systems. Noise in the cabin has also been reduced.

In terms of safety features, the Qashqai features an upgraded Intelligent Emergency Braking system now with Pedestrian Detection. Rear Cross Traffic Alert is also offered on the Qashqai for the first time. Other safety features include Traffic Sign Recognition, Driver Attention Alert, Intelligent Park Assist, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Engines and transmissions are likely to carry over from the current range. That means that the 85 kW / 190 Nm 1.2-litre turbopetrol, 81 kW / 260 Nm 1.5-litre turbodiesel and the 120 kW / 240 Nm 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine will remain.

The facelifted Nissan Qashqai will arrive in South Africa later this year and we will keep you updated as more information becomes available, so stay tuned!

#GenevaMotorShow: New SA-bound Nissan Qashqai unveiled

• ProPilot plus, improved tech
• New flagship Tekna+ grade
• Set to be on sale locally in 2017 or early 2018

Nissan has unveiled its new Qashqai crossover. The new model boasts many upgrades compared to the outgoing model with a focus, says Nissan, "on a contemporary new exterior design, higher levels of interior quality and improved driving performance".

New Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies have been added, says the automaker, continuing Nissan’s ongoing journey towards "zero emissions and zero fatalities".

The new Qashqai will be available in Europe with ProPilot autonomous drive capability. Controlling the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways, this will provide consumers with more control of their vehicle and a more confident drive, plus greater freedom when they want it, whether during heavy traffic congestion or high-speed cruising.

SA-bound

Nissan South Africa says: "The new Qashai will possibly be available during the fourth quarter of 2017. Exact specification is still being considered with product planning teams."

Paul Willcox, Nissan Europe chairman, said: “We have put the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision at the heart of our product strategy, guiding the development of every vehicle. The new Nissan Qashqai is proof of that, with enhancements which will continue to define and set new standards in the crossover segment.”

How the Nissan Qashqai became king of the crossovers

Ten years ago Nissan replaced its Almera hatch with the Qashqai - a gamble that transformed its fortunes and changed the face of the car industry

By the time the 20th century was becoming the 21st, Nissan’s Japanese bosses had become used to the sensation of desperation.

The company had travelled to the brink of existence by 1999 and bankruptcy had been fended off only by an audacious manoeuvre led by Renault’s Carlos Ghosn. The French manufacturer acquired a 37% controlling stake in Nissan for a life-saving $5.4 billion (£4.33bn).

What happened next is automotive legend.

Ghosn’s foundation-shaking Nissan Revival Plan turned the company around by doing the culturally unthinkable in Japan: shutting factories, breaking up cosy and costly ‘keiretsu’ crossshareholding arrangements with suppliers, making redundancies and more.

But it worked. In amazingly short order, Nissan returned to profit and started to produce desirable cars again, under the guidance of talented designer Shiro Nakamura. But not in every quarter.

Several less than scintillating cars were too close to the end of the development pipe to be scrapped or significantly altered. One of these was the second-generation Almera small family hatchback.

It was certainly an earnest improvement on the curiously barrel-bodied first-generation model, the interior of which was as inviting as a smashed bus shelter on a winter’s day.

The new version threw off the eaten-too-many-pies look, sported tail-lights as big as salad bowls and came with excitements such as shopping bag hooks, a loadsecuring net and more in-cabin nooks and crannies than a Cheddar Gorge cave.

It was also pretty tidy in the chassis department and had no serious flaws other than a rear leg room shortfall. However, the big problem was that it didn’t have the brand and showroom appeal of the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.

Once again, Nissan was left wondering how it would ever enjoy the heady success it had seen in the UK during the 1970s, when the Cherry and Sunny regularly appeared among Britain’s top 10 best-sellers.

Nissan’s Focus-chasing sales goals were receding like the unreachable refuge of a chase nightmare. But despite that, the company was masochistically lining itself up for a third pop at an Almera bullseye.

During 2002, its designers and engineers were hard at it, as product planning chief Pierre Loing recounted a couple of years later. But Ghosn, by now steering a robustly recovering Nissan, cancelled the programme in December.

“Merry Christmas!” was Loing’s understandably bittersweet reaction to this news. Despite binning a heap of work, Loing knew that Ghosn was right.

The next problem was how to conceive a car decisively more appealing than a shopping hookkitted Almera. The Ghosn way is not to stare at a blue sky waiting for a vision but to get down and understand what customers might want, using plenty of research and analysis.

What that turned up was that the C-segment in which the Focus, Golf and Almera were competing was already fragmenting towards MPVs and four-wheeldrives.

Further delving uncovered signs that punters didn’t necessarily need the absolute versatility of an MPV, and that while they liked the chunkily adventurous, high-riding demeanour of a four-wheel-drive, they didn’t want the bulk and complication of the breed.

So perhaps there was something in between. From today’s perspective, it seems a fairly modest leap to deduce this, but in the early 2000s, it was only a research-backed hunch.

“The Qashqai has a distinctive flavour born out of the theoretical buyer’s emotional and functional needs,” explained product planner Etienne Henry in 2005. And at that point, two years before project P32L was ready to go on sale, the Qashqai buyer really was only theoretical.

“Back in 2007, the introduction of the Qashqai was a risk,” says Nissan’s vice president for Europe, Paul Willcox.

“It was defining a new segment that didn’t exist and therefore we were uncertain as to what the reception would be. But it’s been unbelievable, from launch right the way through to today. We have won many press awards, the industry has followed our lead and every competitor has brought a crossover into the segment.

“It’s clear that consumers love the Qashqai. You can tell that from the number we’ve sold. We’re selling 250,000 cars a year, every year, and there’s no sign of a decline in demand, which is remarkable.”

It may be a Nissan chief telling it, but the numbers say he is not wrong. Since the model’s launch in February 2007, Nissan has sold more than 3.3 million Qashqais of both generations in 137 countries.

Of those, 2.3m were bought in Europe, its primary market, and 261,429 in the last year alone. For many, the Qashqai makes a stage in people’s motoring life more palatable than it would have been in the days when frumpy MPVs and rattling estates were the only choices.

Some of this writer’s neighbours are a case in point: before kids, a BMW 320d Coupé occupied the drive; after kids, it’s a Qashqai.

“When the Qashqai launched in 2007, it was unique in the market,” says Willcox. “It has remained as the number one crossover because it has stayed true to its original ideals and because we have consistently added technology through the car’s life.”

Nissan’s Sunderland plant has played a huge role in the Qashqai’s success, this factory being the primary supplier. By the end of 2016, it had produced 2,655,551 of the 3.3m global total.

Of those, 1,752,232 were examples of the original model, including the seven-seat Qashqai +2. Not only has the UK produced most Qashqais, but much of the creative design and engineering work was carried out in the UK, too.

Of the 200 people who worked on the original car, 80% of them were UK-based, although their task was somewhat eased by the use of an existing platform.

By the time the second-generation Qashqai was under development, there were 500 people on the project at Cranfield and it has helped propel Nissan’s European R&D centres towards a 50% increase in staff.

By the end of 2015, sales of SUVs reached a landmark in Europe, outselling superminis and small hatchbacks for the first time. Many models contributed to this, but there can be no doubt that the Qashqai lit the fire of growth.

These days, this quietly accomplished crossover seems a bit ordinary. But count that as another measure of its success: the best ideas are the ones that take root so deeply that they become the norm.

They are leaving the upgrade of the rear end for when the new model comes out! They are learning from Apple. This is just a facelift after all. But a good facelift nonetheless.

Renault and Nissan targeted by ransomware hackers

Production at Nissan's Sunderland plant affected by same cyber attack that hit NHS

Renault and Nissan have been attacked by online hackers, affecting production at Nissan's Sunderland factory.

The attacks are reported to have been carried out by the same group which attacked the NHS this week. The BBC reports Renault is the first French company to be affected by the cyber attack, which steals and encrypts files and documents, before demanding a fee of $300 (around £230) to de-crypt them. In total, around 75,000 systems in 99 countries are believed to have been affected.

A Renault UK spokesman said: "Groupe Renault confirms it was impacted by the global cyber attack that began late on Friday May 12. It consists of a Ransomware virus. Proactive measures were taken immediately in order to stop the spread of the Virus and protect the group. A full diagnosis is in progress in order to put in place the appropriate solutions to resume operations."

Nissan's Sunderland plant, where the Qashqai and Infiniti Q30 are made - has also been affected.

"Like many organisations our plant was subject to a ransomware attack affecting some of our systems on Friday evening," said a spokesman. "We are working to resolve the issue."

Most affected organisations so far have been state owned. Renault is part-owned by the French government, while other targets include the NHS and Russian state-owned rail services. It's unknown who is behind the global attack, and Europol is investigating. Nissan is part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance partnership.
