Biggest online shops in South Africa

Hmmm. The article and the link to the report sales page does not give much detail about the methodology for the market share information. I find it unbelievable that private companies will share their revenue in this manner.
 
Did MyBroadband spend R14k on that report?! :wtf:

Highly flawed report as it just nit-picks a few online stores. The report hardly is representative of the local environment and tends to solely focus on "casual" online shoppers and overlooks the habitual shoppers which purchase online abroad (due to local pricing not being competitive).

Like others said, it is completely ignoring the "informal" online places such as classifieds (Olx, Gumtree) and it does not even cover the competitive field appropriately (such as Loot, Raru, Makro). Based on the report Takealot would have a market share of more than 1bn in sales - I highly doubt that this is the case. Placing Woolworths and PicknPay (nevermind Exclusive Books) into the top online stores is just ludicrous. I doubt that outlets such as Sportsman Warehouse has a GMV of 300-400m online alone.

I do however agree that some on the list can be called the top-cash-burners in the history of SA e-commerce :whistle:

Spending 15K on a Euromonitor "market-research" is just as good as blowing a 100K on Effective Measures :P

That's a key point imbedded in your post. Market share is one thing, profit another.

Customers enjoy buying things below 'cost' but in the long run it's not good for our market to have a shake-out (or should I say shake-a-lot)

Do you have any data that indicate that international buying figures are significant?

They are not online shops. They are advertising sites.
 
Which ever company strikes a deal with Capitec will dominate online sales IMO

They are listing sites; an online shop is a catalogue (which is a listing) enabled with a cart. You cannot physically touch those items displayed on a website, everything is on order (or unavailable).

Yes, talk to people working at the airport handling imports. People believe that SA consumers are importing more than they buy online locally. I am not sure if Sars officially reports on import duties collected from individuals - but those are the figures you want to look at.

Some do escrow. Others accept a listing fee for trades being conducted. Bidorbuy is often called a "listing/classified site" because we do not hold stock and do not fulfill. In the same sentiment, you will also not classify eBay an online shop. Us "classifieds" move more merchandise than those "traditional retailers". FWIW: Although we do not hold stock, manage returns or fulfill, we do have a cool cart and accept payments :whistle:
