Hardly an explanation, its a possible explanation which would more than likely be wrong if you ask me.

The rise is due to the spike in fscking ANNOYING AS ALL HELL spam SMSes

The increase is because of the sms channel available to digital marketers. With compliance and POPI regulations on the horizon, this channel is in overdrive mode.

I am in the digital marketing industry, but we saw the writing on the wall, and we are the biggest in web/social/online live generated hot leads.
The sms spam model is an abhorrent channel, yet currently accounts for 70 - 80 % of conversions. Hence the proliferation of spaminess.
 
i normally send an sms because my data ran out, and its kark expensive still for mobile data :D
