Feedback: Tenda AC6 Smart 11ac Dual Band WiFi Router

I avoid Tenda and TrendNet like the plague.

I think it would be useful to future buyers if you explain why you do. I haven't turned into some sort of Tenda fanboy since buying mine. I was just impressed enough with what I got at that price point to share my view on here but I'd happily welcome criticisms to the brand in this thread and would even add it to the my original post to help inform others.

I'm not an fanboy of anything.

I like things that work no matter who makes them.

Since setting up the AC9 the first day I haven't had to change a thing and it hasn't flinched at anything I've thrown at it, not a single hiccup, exactly the way a router should be, left alone in a corner out of mind.

Who knows, maybe they stopped making junk.

Having just purchased a Tenda AC9, I can confirm, it is indeed awesome value for money. Setup took a second and getting 200mbps down and up over wi-fi.

Told you.

The equivalent TP-Link would've probably cost close to R500 more.

Fo sho.
I was considering the Ubiquiti Unifi @ R2k
For my apartment, this is more than perfect.
Hope it lasts...

Mine got pulled off the cabinet it's perched on in the living room by my kids the other day. They somehow managed to snag the power cable running down the back of said cabinet. It hit the tile floor hard and an antennae popped out of its socket. Luckily all the wiring was still in tact. Popped it back in and it's been running fine ever since. Honestly didn't think it would survive a fall like that.

Four months have now passed since my initial post and to be honest I've forgotten about this router and the thread up until noticing it in my post history. The Tenda lives on top of a cabinet in my house, just doing it's thing day in and day out. The only way it gets a hard reset is when our power goes out. I was looking for decent wifi coverage for my particular set of needs as well as something reliable and it's met those expectations. If it breaks in a year's time I'd honestly just buy another one if they're still priced this well.

It's not a Ubiquiti and in my opinion shouldn't even be compared to one. It's a budget router and delivers in that category and price range (YMMV however). Worth considering if you're after an affordable 11ac dual band wifi router.

+1

If mine breaks I'm buying a new one a minute later, someone in this thread, How a cheap router kills your home Wi-Fi speeds, started an argument with me for some reason where he didn't believe me how fast it is, I had to post a screenshot of me getting 362Mbps copying a file from my server to my phone to prove my point.

Quck OT noob question

I am running Telkom LTE with Huawei router. Will this make my wifi coverage to the rooms that are the furthest away from my study, where the router now is ?

Difficult to say as we don't know how far away those rooms are from your study and what type of obstructions sit in between them. Perhaps, another post of mine from earlier in this thread could at least provide a good point of reference for you:
The farthest point in our house is 22 meters away from the router with fours walls between that and the device. The room was a later addition and boasts a fairly steep drop in elevation: roughly 1.6m below the foundation of the rest of the house and probably 2m+ below where the router is situated. I suspect this may further contribute to signal loss but I don't know for sure. I'm also picking up two neighbour's wifi signal so interference may be another issue. I've switched to channels that they don't use so I'm hoping that negates it. I haven't measured actual through-put (I really should) but 1080p and 4K content streams without issue to that part of the house now so I'm happy.

In conclusion: I get decent enough coverage in a room 22 meters away from the router, through 4 brick walls and at least the partial obstruction of the rest of the house's foundation to be able to stream 4K video content uninterrupted.

Does this router not have 100Mb ports? How do you get 362Mbps if the server is plugged into a 100Mbps port? Or is the server also connected wireless?

Very nice routers, a friend got one but you can't get more than 10MB/s copy speed from wifi to anything plugged into the ports as it's only 100Mb ports

Thanks for the info,

this is the setup

Worst case scenario, you may struggle with signal in the top-left bedroom. I base this on counting a possible combination of six walls/doors through which signal will have to penetrate. Most of them seem to be single brick though so that will count in your favour. it's impossible to give you any sort of assurance but I reckon coverage in your home should be decent based on my experiences with the AC6.

Disclaimer: I know very little about how Wifi signal propagates. Basing my conclusions off of a very basic knowledge of the subject. Your higher frequency band may bounce off your corridor walls for all I know and avoid other walls all-together? Or I may be speaking from my ass :D

If memory serves he has the AC9 which has the 1000Mbps port.
