Intel and AMD have made buying a CPU unbelievably confusing

Good article, but biased, as I disagree with:
Intel has not launched its 8th-gen high-end platform, but it will be unable to use the “X399” chipset name when it does.

Historically Intel chipsets can be used exclusively with Intel CPU's (no support for AMD CPU's), it can be named as "Intel X399", no problem. Therefore putting AMD to the same bag as Intel (as deliberatively confusing customers) is completely inappropriate.
 
Article's trying its level best to lump AMD with the likes of Intel. Sure, you could stretch it and call it a dick move on AMD's part, but the people who are interested in motherboards (especially these ones) would know whats up.

Indeed, they will go to motherboards > AMD section, choose an AM4 mobo of their liking and a Ryzen of their liking and wham bam...
 
BS! AMD only has X399 for Threadripper and AM4 socket for Ryzen. If you want Ryzen you just go to AM4 and pick the features you want, no problems with trying to figure out which pins are going to fit or not.
 
This is why I'll switch to Apple. There it is easy, but the previous years Macbook, done.

If you have the PhD needed to figure out what set of adapters are needed (since the current MacBook has exactly the same same connectors as my phone...) to turn it into something more useful than a tablet with a keyboard running a better OS than most tablets...
