TV Licences – SABC vs the BBC

I would gladly pay the BBC licence fee here in south Africa if it were possible...

Comparing apples with... apples that have been smashed up, run over, and run through the darkest sections of a sewerage plant.

Yea... no

It's like comparing a sheep to a Scrambler...

Seriously? Who was dumb enough to compare the SABC to the BBC?

Can't wait for SABC's production of Planet Earth. :crylaugh:

I thought we were decolonising? Why does sabc what this british colonial 'thing' called a license here?

The BBC, whilst they are orders of magnitude better than the SABC, is too Orwellian by my liking.

What an impossible comparison!

1. The BBC does not (read can not) advertise.
2. It's governed by charter and although (I know) money is sometimes wasted, this not on executive salaries!!
3. The BBC turns out world standard drama, comedy and quality news.
4. It also provides some 5 TV channels for terrestrial viewers.
5. Multiple Radio Stations both local and/or for ethnic minorities.
6. Provides content for many Satellite/Cable providers including DStv.
7. Sells content to generate revenue via BBC World a commercial organisation which funds the BBC.
8. It also provides iPlayer which is effectively a streaming service on par with the best!

The BBC and ITV for that matter provide content tailored at ex-pat community.

How can you compare this with Micky Mouse SABC?

Just passed the TV at work which is tuned in to SABC 3, which is showing the original Starsky and Hutch that went off air in 1979. Remind me what we are comparing again?

:erm: scrubs, not one person has a personal inhouse choir... bbc = pathetic

Why should you be paying licence to own a TV, if they want us to pay for their content then it's as simple as providing a set-top-box for free to the poor and charge a small fee for others then charge a yearly subscription fee for anyone who wants to access the content.

I would love to see the TV Licence model challenged in court. Until then, bend over dearest Public.

I really expected a bit more from this article. Like a table comparing top rated shows across boradcasters, or shows picked up internationally.... anything really.... just so I can quantify the difference between a respectively well-run broadcaster and this shambles with which we find ourselves.

BBC iPlayer is amazing if you use a service like Getflix to access it. But it is inevitable that at some point it won't work without an authorised account tied to the UK TV license database. It's already the case if you try to watch through a browser. Fortunately the Apple TV app still just works.

I'd pay the UK fee happily if it was possible. I haven't tried though - maybe it is if you choose an address that is unlikely to have anyone living at it.

It's pretty insane that the BBC didn't start doing a Netflix years ago and not syndicating its content across the world. Outside of the UK they could offer an amazing streaming service with all the BBC and ITV content for $10pm.

I'd pay the BBC license just for their documentaries...Never mind all the awesome fiction series they have produced over the years.
